TV Report: Castle

[personal profile] mabfan and I both like Nathan Fillion, so we decided to see what his new show "Castle" was like. Because it took us almost a week to watch the premiere, I'd heard/seen a bunch of reviews, and I knew that among my friends the reaction was mixed. So I went in with semi-low expectations (people whose opinions I highly regard had given it a "meh" or worse), but to my surprise I liked it. It's never going to be highbrow entertainment, but it's fun.

Without spoiling anything, I'll say that I like most of the main and prominent side characters, and I'm a fan of mystery books so I'll keep watching.

And this means that three "Firefly" actors (Summer Glau, Adam Baldwin, and Nathan Fillion) have shows currently on the air, yes? Am I forgetting anyone?

Episode 2 is tonight... Looking forward to it! :D

Zach and I watched it... it looks like fun.

Yuki and I also had mixed reactions to this show, but we're going to hang with it for another episode. We did laugh a lot, so that's a major plus for us. But like you say, it's not going to be highbrow, self-awareness-raising fare.

To me, that's a check in the good column. If I can have some time with amusing characters and an interesting story without being 'touched by a network' on the Very Important Social Issue Du Jour, I'm happy.

Oh, and I learned a new term: Graydar. Very handy for those who like silver foxes.

I don't know that it won't be self-aware. Castle certainly knows his genre, and he applies it to his world to great effect. He then turned it around with the idea of doing research into his new "character" based on somebody that he's attracted to. Seems awfully meta/self-aware to me. The trick will be if the writers can continually keep it on point, as this has to straddle the line between "crime procedural" and "cop farce".

you make a good point, and I agree. Though I'm worried as well about that fine balance devolving into 'romantic comedy' when the characters seem well-crafted enough to carry a stronger story line.

I noticed several points when there was a set-up and a payoff later in the show. Particularly that "Apples! Apples!" line, but there were other good ones. That's a hallmark of good mystery writing, and gives me reason to hang in there with this show.

I endorse your remarks. Just saw it; unpretentious and — if someone manages to murder the mother — a cast of interesting characters.

I enjoyed it- it was just fun.

If you didn't get a chance... watch Kings, which does have a shot at being something different. We *Really* enjoyed it last night, and the amount of references to tanach were interesting..

I think that given how far behind we will be falling on shows this week due to Lunacon, Castle will have to wait. But I do hope Nathan gets a successful show.

Alan Tudyk will be appearing on that new show from Joss.

Also, one more rec for Kings.

I heard rumor that Alan Tudyk is going to be on Dollhouse.

Oh cool. I like him.

[identity profile] caryabend.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
He was the headline guest at Farpoint, a few weeks ago in Baltimore.

Although it isn't on the air yet, Morena Baccarin has been cast in the remake of V.

What show is Adam Baldwin in?

Not having tv, I'm so out of it. ;) Thank goodness for Hulu and Joost. ;)

Ah, I think I have heard of this show.

[identity profile] fynixsoul.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Where is Summer Glau? I thought she was going to be in Dollhouse, but so far she hasn't made an appearence.

[identity profile] gnomi.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
She's on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

I really liked Castle, but Nathan is just so smug and snarky, part of me thinks he is not sucessful in something unless he can be smug and snarky, aka see him in Drive!

Frequent "Firefly" guest star Mark Sheppard (Badger) has been on BSG and Dollhouse already this season. And Jewel Staite only recently ended her run on "Stargate: Atlantis".

[identity profile] fizzixrat.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and also dipping into the recurring "Firefly" guest star pool, Christina Hendricks (Saffron) is a cast member on "Mad Men", apparently.

My comment to my spouse after we watched episode 1: "How come when my book came out, I didn't get to sign any body parts?"

So now I wonder about your spouse...
