Goodbye 2009; Hello "The Year We Make Contact"

And so we come to the end of another year. For many, it was a horrible year, but for me, 2009 will always be special because of the birth of Muffin and Squeaker. [personal profile] mabfan and I saw our lives change significantly this year, and we are amazingly blessed.

May the coming year bring you everything you want and nothing you don't.

(And a note to the various media outlets: it may be the end of the ohs/aughts/naughts, but it is not the end of the decade. See earlier rants re "end of the millennium.")

I hadn't realized tonight was a blue moon! I remember the last (NYE) one nineteen years ago. Or have there been others since? Nineteen years, hmm, that would make sense (Jewish/Gregorian calendar etc.), no?

yup, first one since 1990 on new year's eve, which was just barely the first one of my life.

Decades have been counted from xxx0 to xxx9 for a long time, and since they aren't numbered or aligned with anything else, I don't see a problem with that. Any group of ten consecutive years is a decade.

The decade which is just ending had one year in the twentieth century and nine in the twenty-first. I find that entertaining.

I'm with madfilkentist. If we talked about "the 201st decade" like we talk about the "21st century" or "3rd millenium" then yes, that decade would end in a year. But we talk about the 1960s and the Eighties and such, so even though this decade doesn't have a well-accepted name, it ends tonight. Bring on the teens!

I agree with your agreement. You pointed out exactly what I was going to point out.

It certainly is the end of a decade. 'Course, so was last year, and next year, and every year.

What a nice post, the simple specialness of the birth of your daughters above all else, the recognition of how the year has been for others, the very nicely put wishes, and the informational note that needed to be noted. Thanks so much for your posts, and amen to your wishes for all of us.

May the coming year bring you everything you want and nothing you don't.
And the same to you, as well!
