Reappearing...and an update
Dec. 2nd, 2003 07:53 amSorry for the disappearing-off-the-face-of-the-planet thing; I had hoped to post when we got back from DC, but things got nuts. Here's the quick rundown; additional information as time permits:
-- Trip to DC/Capclave: Lots of fun. We got to Union Station on Thursday (20 November) just in time to catch the last Red Line Metro train going to Silver Spring, arriving at my sister and brother-in-law's at around 1 AM. We had a very nice cabbie from the Silver Spring Metro to the house who stayed to make sure that we had the right house before he pulled away (and, yes, this was after we'd already paid him, so it wasn't like he was holding out for a bigger tip). On Friday, after much sleep, MAB and I headed into the District to go to the Air and Space Museum, where we saw the IMAX movie on the building of the International Space Station and the exhibit they currently have on the Wright Brothers and the birth of the airplane.
After the museum, we headed over to the hotel where Capclave was being held to register ourselves and my sister and brother-in-law for the convention. We then headed back to the house to help set up for shabbat. As we waited for the bus from the Metro to the house, we encountered
zsero, who was also staying at the house.
We had dinner with friends of ours who live in my sister's community, and then MAB and I headed to the convention. After some hanging out in the con suite and a panel that MAB was on, we decided we were tired and headed back to the house, where we fell almost immediately to sleep.
On Saturday morning, we went to a bat mitzvah at the shul (the family had sponsored a lunch-sized kiddush for the whole community) and then (after a stop at the house to change from shul clothes to con clothes) we headed back to the convention. We spent the balance of the afternoon there and, after a panel MAB was on regarding Jewish SF (which, coincidentally, began just at the time for Havdallah), MAB and I met up with the friends who originally introduced us (who live in Montgomery County, MD) and we went out to dinner with them. Much fun was had, and then we headed back to the hotel for more conventioning, followed by a return to the house for packing and sleep.
Sunday, we did last-minute packing and preparations for the trip home, and then we and our luggage headed over to the hotel for MAB's 10 AM panel. Following the panel, we did one last circuit of the dealer's room and then headed to the Metro to head to the train back home. Our train was slightly delayed, but we still arrived before 8:00 PM. We went home, dropped off our luggage, and went on Protein Quest, then quickly checked e-mail and went to sleep.
-- Work and Life Craziness: Monday was crazy at work for both MAB and me. And on Monday night, as we were finishing dinner and MAB was preparing to head back to the school for an Open House, we learned of the death of MAB's uncle (see http://www.livejournal.com/users/mabfan/22480.html). So as I ran out to do some errands, MAB arranged for train tickets for us to head down to NYC for the funeral. We went down and back on Tuesday, which was exhausting, but we were glad to be able to be there for the mourners. And then Wednesday we went to work again.
-- Thanksgiving, the weekend, and stuff: Thanksgiving was spent with the same relatives we go to every year, and we had a very good time. Good food, good conversation, and the usual chaos of having large quantities of people all in one kitchen. :-) On Friday, neither MAB nor I were working, so we did errands and such, until shabbat came in. Friday night was relaxed, and we went to sleep relatively early, and then on Saturday we went to friends' for lunch. Again, much fun was had. On Sunday, MAB and I did some much needed tasks both around the apartment and in the form of running more errands, and then prepared to go back to work after the four-day weekend.
So that's what I've been up to; I hope everyone had a happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday if you celebrate and a good week-plus whether or not you celebrate American Thanksgiving.
