Jan. 29th, 2004 09:42 am1) Do you have a Y2K Survival Drawer in your new office?
Indeed, I do. Chocolate, salty-crunchy snacks, candied ginger, emery boards, instant soup, and other various and sundry things one might need but not want to shlep out to get. I've had four desks since I started at this job, and I've had a snack/other drawer in each one.
2) You once told me your dream was to be a dictionary writer. Is that still true? Why does that appeal to you?
Yup. I still hope to be a lexicographer some day. I love the idea of helping craft a snapshot-in-time of the English language (because, in truth, all a dictionary can be is a snapshot). Crafting the definitions of words, reporting on how the words are or should be used (I'm more in the "should be" camp - prescriptivist - when it comes to dictionaries, though for the most part I'm in the "how it is" camp - descriptivist - when it comes to actual language use), these are the things that fascinate me.
3) How do you feel about interdating/the "Jewish continuity" problem? (This is a loaded question, I know. I'm trying to get lots of people's perspectives.)
Before I was even of the age that I would date, my parents instilled in me the belief that if I didn't date outside Jewish circles, I wouldn't run the risk of falling in love with someone who was not Jewish and then having to deal with the issue. I myself never did interdate, but I cannot in good conscience dictate what others should do. Matters of the heart are so hard to be rational and logical about; I took a route that allowed me to avoid the issue entirely.
4) Do you keep in touch with anyone else from IGI? Or do you do your best to forget about it (not that I blame you)?
I'm in touch with one person who still works there, but she was a friend before she began to work at IGI. And she keeps me in the loop in terms of what's going on with the company, etc. I do consider dropping by occasionally (and I did, while they were still in the old location), but since they moved to Brighton, it's harder for me to just drop in and say "hi."
