Reminder: Seventh Annual gnomi's Birthday Celebration

A reminder:

This Saturday night, beginning at 8 PM, mabfan and I will be hosting my annual Arisia birthday gathering at the Hyatt Regency Cambridge, 575 Memorial Drive, Cambridge, MA.

Even if you're not attending the convention, you're welcome to come to my party. I'd love to see folks! I'll be posting the room number tomorrow as soon as we have it.

Hm. Nomi, you might want to tell your friends that there will be additional security and badge checking this year for the con. Someone online has been posting that it's "easy" to ghost Arisia, and this is causing a lot of discussion and changes in policy at the upper levels. If we get inspected by a fire marshall, they'll simply tell us to get rid of a bunch of attendees who don't have hotel rooms to get back down to a reasonable number. This is why we're always so careful about having a membership cap. This hotel is only filled with Arisia during our weekend, because it's so small and we're so big.

I hate to disappoint, but I did want to warn you that people without badges will have a problem. I know that's not great for your party, but it is what's best for the convention as a whole, unfortunately. :(

Fortunately, one-day passes for Arisia are still an option, as we're not yet sold out. Your friends will need to buy a membership, though.

Oh, I know! I understand that part. The problem is that your friends still count toward the fire safety code, if they're in the building at all.

I apologize for the frustration. If we were in a larger hotel, this wouldn't be an issue. But the fact is, the Hyatt is a small hotel for our group. We hit the membership cap last year, as you know, and had to turn people away at the door who wanted to pay for the convention because we weren't allowed to let them in due to fire safety.

Perhaps this can be taken to email or phone?

My friends will have our room number, will be coming straight there, and will not be approaching convention membership at all.

I really am swamped, workwise today. I cannot guarantee that e-mail or phone will be answered with any sort of speed before the end of the weekend (hello work deadline). I appreciate your concern, but I highly doubt the five or six friends who will be coming in for my party will be a problem.

I'm sorry you're swamped. I am also swamped, and on my way to the hotel to continue setting up for con. I apologize if I can't continue this conversation after this point.

I just want to avoid the situation in which you have friends coming to the hotel who are turned away at the door for not having registrations, with the increased badge checking this year. If it were just your five or six friends coming into the hotel without badges, it wouldn't be a problem (as it hasn't been in the past), but other people have made it a problem for your friends by "ghosting" the con and flaunting it where the conchair has seen it.

It may still not be an issue, but I would rather warn you and your friends than not.

Are you saying that people are going to be prevented from entering the hotel itself if they don't have a badge? That seems odd to me, as it creates logistical problems for someone who chooses to day trip on Sunday and doesn't yet have a badge, or someone who decides to go touring Boston for a while and then comes back to the hotel having left their badge in their hotel room.

I don't know the full details, as it's not my division who's working on this, but I do know that there will be a point beyond which everyone will be expected to have a badge, and I assume it's before people hit the elevators. Hence, trying to give a heads-up to you guys and your friends.
