-- We are re-en-fridged. Yay!

-- A good friend sent me a lovely CD right before the last holiday, and I just got a chance to listen to it this morning. It was a wonderful way to start my day.

-- Julie Kramer of WFNX Radio yesterday said that she wasn't going to say anything about the Red Sox so as to "not put a kain ayin harah" (frequently -- and by Julie -- pronounced "konnah-horrah") on the team. I'm vastly amused by DJs who use Yiddish terms effortlessly. ("Kain ayin harah" means "not to tempt the Evil Eye").

-- I have a T-Mos Coffee Caddy that allows me to make one -- count it, one -- cup of fresh-brewed coffee at a time. This pleases me immensely and, simultaneously, allows me to save money on coffee.

In my house it was pronounced "keina-HURrah."

Yeah - I transcribed the most common pronunciation I hear (in my house, we said "kunnah-HURrah").

Though I'd sometimes pronounce it "canine Horah" and then go and try to dance with the dog. But I'm odd that way. And, thankfully, the dog was usually amused.

And, see, that's what I'd call a canine horror. But that's just me. :-)

One of the more amusing experiences not long after I moved there was talking to someone from Verizon's customer service. I forget what the subject was but he was responding to something either I or he had said with "Ma nishtana".... I knew I wasn't in the mid-west anymore :).

Hee! I love it. And, yeah - proof that the population of Jews is higher here than, say, in Indiana.

But the DJ got it wrong, no? I mean, to not put a kain ayin harah on the red sox would be to avoid protecting them from the Evil Eye... right?

Eh, yes and no. Some people use that phraseology to mean "I don't want to say something that would make someone else say 'kain ayin harah.'"

Is there, anywhere, a "real" way to pronounce anything in Yiddush? Reading "The Joys of Yiddush", I'm lead to think not, despite the efforts of YIVO.

Why is it that if you make half a pot of coffee, the coffee isn't as good?

For me, because it wastes coffee. I used to have a serious problem with caffeine addiction (headaches, sleeplessness, etc.), so I cut 99% of the caffeine out of my diet. Now the only caffeine I have regularly is one cup of coffee in the morning, and only on days I'm in the office. So my new coffee toy allows me to have fresh-brewed coffee without having to waste coffee or spend money. :-)

She mentioned this morning that a number of people around the station were now saying they, too, "didn't want to put a kain ayin harah" on the team, either, but I don't think she ever actually explained what she meant by it. It was kind of clear from context when she first said it, but that's it.
