-- An observation: A cold, windy, rainy day is the worst time for there to be no working traffic lights at the intersection of Broadway and Third Street in Kendall Square.

-- A question (for those of you who do such things): In comments/IM/whatever, do you tend to set action descriptions off in asterisks or double-colons (thus, are you more likely to type *hugs* or ::hugs::)? Incredibly geeky Nomis want to know.

ETA: All this talk of asterisks in comments reminds me of a ditty I believe I first learned from my father when I was a kid (hey, [profile] beckyfeld, do you remember it, too?):

Mary had a little Porsche
She drove it very brisk
Wasn't she a silly sort?
She had her *

Haven't seen much of the :: thing. I use asterisks. I've seen angle brackets and underscores; after asterisks, angle brackets are most elegant to me, even if you can't use them on LJ.

I read "Rambly Bits" as "Dangly Bits" at first. I doubt that's a huge surprise to you. *g*

I use asterisks most of the time, but sometimes for hugs I use parentheses around the person's name, as so: {{{Nomi}}}.

I use both. If I'm using double asterisks for emphasis (e.g., I can't *believe* that CBS is refusing to run that ad) then I'll use double colons for actions (e.g., ::bangs head into wall until little blue donkeys circle my head::) to keep the two separate.

Otherwise I'll use asterisks for actions since it's two keystrokes shorter and I am a lazy Mer.

I tend to use single colons framing an action, a carry-over from some message boards (particularly the Quill), where the smilies are coded that way (or preceded by single colons, but that doesn't make sense in text), so that typing  would net a blushing smiley or typing  would net a laughing one.

I also noticed the lack of traffic lights as I came through that intersection today, on foot...fun.

I first noticed it this morning around 7:20, when I was walking from the T to work. I then noticed it again, both going to and returning from, my afternoon walk at about 1:40-2:30. So when I got back to my desk, I called the Cambridge police. By the time I reached the intersection again at 5 (on my way to the T to go home), they'd put out big barrels with STOP signs affixed to them, making the intersection a 3-way stop. Still made it hard to be a pedestrian, but at least now the cars were actually stopping for one another.

Interesting. I've never really used message boards heavily; I wonder if a lot of them do the colon-expression-colon thing.

No, not particularly a surprise. :-)

Interesting use of parentheses for hugs; I don't think I've seen that frequently (though now that you mention it, I know I've seen you use it).

I use asterisks, mostly. The colons seem to be up and coming, though, and I have been known to use them. I like angle brackets (which I have a habit of calling "bra" and "ket"), but since I now do a lot of my own HTML, I tend to reserve the bra and ket for their HTML functions.

Thanks for the clock site.

I use asterisks, never colons. I sometimes do the {hug} thing, which I believe I picked up here on LJ.

In email I'm more likely to use angle brackets, but with the extra cost in keystrokes to render them in HTML, I usually don't on LJ. Though for things closer to "tagging" I do, such as in:

<AOL>Me too.</AOL>

I love things like the clock site. I found it just today, for really dorky reasons -- I bought a new watch when I went out this afternoon (digital, to replace one that they couldn't change the band on), and when I got back to my desk, I wanted to be able to set it. I wanted my watch to be right. Like, as right as I could get it. So I figured I'd check the atomic clock. And when I Googled for it, I hit on the NIST site. Which made my little time-obsessed heart very happy. :-)

I tend to _underscore_ for emphasis, and it has been my habit to use angle brackets to signify action... but that confuses LJ, so I haven't settled on a substitute yet.

Today was weird, weather-wise... the morning was gross and wet, and we were busy. The afternoon was pleasant and sunny, and the store was quiet. I'll never understand people...

As an old-time geek, I usually *asterisk* actions and _underscore_ emphasis. As for the time site, it's a really cool site but I can't use it at work because we block port 80 ;-<

Oh yeah, that leads me to another geek question - when using emoticons, do you use parentheses or angle brackets for the mouth, and why? As you can tell, I usually use angle brackets because I find that the emoticon is frequently _inside_ parentheses and "looks wrong" if it's
(;-))
instead of
(;->)

I work in 1 Main, which is the building at the corner of Main and Land (right at the base of the Longfellow). This morning, the lights were still out and they'd removed the stop signs, but a coworker reports that the lights were working by the time she came in, so I have hope for my trip home.

Yeah -- I think it's the old-time-geek thing for me, too. Muscles are used to doing _underscored_ emphasis and *starred* actions. But since I see ::actions:: a lot, I've started using it in some contexts.

Sorry to hear you can't use the time site at work. But maybe at home... :-)

As you can see above, I use parens for smiles. If I put a nose in my smilies (which I do most often), ket-smiles look like arrows to me, and I get confuffled. <--- me big dork. If I'm putting the smiley in parens, then I put a space between the smile-paren and the close-paren (like this :-) ). 'Cause, y'know, I'm a dork.

Of course, then I get into the odd mouths:

:-P :-S :-| :-o etc.
