It's usually translated as "old-new," but the likely more accurate translation is from the Hebrew "al-t'nai" meaning "conditional" in the sense that the building was historically used for multiple communal purposes, so it was designated as a synagogue, subject to the right to use it for such other purposes. (Not sure whether these included golem construction.)
