a) I'm horrible at going up to people I'm not positive are the people I think they are (ask mabfan -- he's had to approach folks he's maybe met once or twice because I'm too shy to do the "are you x-and-such" thing)
b) I was deep in conversation with an old friend I haven't seen in a while and didn't want to interrupt her.
Both are quite good reasons that I can understand completely. For (a), let's just say that I particularly like cons and similar environments where I can at least attempt the "can I see the name on the badge" maneuver before saying hi. As for (b), ask Leslie Turek sometime about the conversation we started at Noreascon and continued at Boskone.
