Well, I paid my monthly Stupid tax this morning. I was glancing at the headlines in the Brookline TAB this morning as I crossed the (quiet at 6:40 AM) street [personal profile] mabfan and I live on, and as I reached the opposite side, the toe of my sandal caught on a slightly raised bit of driveway pavement and down I went, *boom!* onto my outer left calf. I'm pretty decently bruised and scraped where I landed, but am otherwise fine. As was my handheld, as it was in the pocket opposite the one I fell on (I fell on my wallet. Not a big problem).

And that gets this month's Stupid tax out of the way. So now I'm good until September. :-)

heee! It's not funny, I know, but I love the way you put it... for what it's worth, I paid mine as well, having gained a dinner plate sized bruise on my thigh where I slammed into the corner of a table

Yeah, I've paid my tax that way in the past. Though for me it's usually work desk and hip.

Wait a minute...there's a monthly Stupid Tax?

counts up injuries from falling on sidewalk July 21...smooshed hand, scraped right knee, scraped and bruised left knee, bruised right shoulder... Okay, I'm good until November. What a relief! :)

I figure it's some sort of tax due to the universe.

I'm glad you're off the hook until November, and I hope you're healing well from your fall.

Thanks. Yeah, the shoulder's fine and the hand's getting better. The knees are scarred, though...no short skirts for me until next summer. :P

I'm glad to hear that nothing's broken, including the handheld. My mom had some new glasses with a bad prescription a while back with the result that she was often tripping on curbs. Her face was so black and blue for a while, she almost felt like saying to everyone she met, "No, I haven't been the victim of an assault, just a victim of bad glasses." Needless to say after the second or third time she tripped she got a new pair.

Mm, yeah. Bad glasses are a pain, as they can completely throw off both your balance and your sense of distance.

Glad you're ok-except-bruising.

Last time I had a noticeable trip on the pavement, I broke a finger... Come to think of it, perhaps that was paying the Stupid Tax in advance for a long while...

Could be. I try to only pay on a monthly basis. I was exempt from Stupid Tax for a while in college, but that's because the Universe had gotten its payment way in advance when I blew out my knee going down a flight of stairs.

I'm trying to think of some way to deliberately deduct small amounts of Stupid tax from my life at regular intervals such that I get a big Stupid tax refund sometime, but all the schemes I can come up with are just stupid enough that I owe more.

I think the Stupid tax refund comes when you benefit from someone else's Stupid tax payment. Like when you find a $20 bill that someone else stupidly stuck in a pocket and that then fell out onto the sidewalk.

Owowowowowowowowow. I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you! Already it's down to just a dull ache unless I rub my leg against something (like my desk).

Which, if your klutziness is anything like mine, you do with startling regularity.

Oh, indeed. I am a very, very big klutz. Some of it I blame on not knowing my right from my left. But some of it, I think, is just natural talent. :-)

I love that icon, the kitty in the frog hat. It's adorable.

For more, go to CatPrin. That is the most well-tempered cat in the world.

Heh. I just checked out that site. Yeah -- that's a very patient cat. Though in some of the shots kitty doesn't look particularly pleased.

No, but it doesn't look homicidal like my older cat would, and it hasn't run off like my little cats would.

True.

We had a cat when I was growing up who had been a stray. She was the most docile cat -- she'd let us dress her up, all sorts of stuff. We had another cat who also didn't mind being dressed up, but that was because she was too fat and lazy to move out of our way.

(and neither was the cat in my icon, who was afraid of her own shadow and wouldn't let people get close enough to pat her, let alone dress her up, except on her own terms.)

Aw. The cat in your icon sounds like our Callie, although she is not fat and lazy yet. She's only a year old, and is still lithe and energetic. (She's the tortoiseshell in the icon.)

Actually, the cat in my icon was Yofi, who was mostly Siamese and all scaredy-cat. The fat-and-lazy one was my sister's cat, Barakie, who was fast as lightning (which is how she got her name -- "barak" is Hebrew for lightning") until she was spayed, at which point she segued into fat-and-lazy.

I hope you feel better soon.

Now I'm curious about this tax. As your wallet and handheld were fine, there was no financial loss due to the moment of stupidity. Not only that, but I doubt that this was caused by stupidity. It was an act of carelessness, not an act caused by lack of intelligent thought. That said, are you sure that you've paid your Stupid Tax this month?

Date: 2005-08-11 04:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gnomi.livejournal.com
Thanks!

And, yes. Stupid tax isn't always financial in nature. The pain in my leg is sufficient payment for the month.

The Stupid Tax rate always seems much higher in my neck of the woods. Why is that? ;)

and here I thought the stupid tax was parking tickets, the fines associated with paying parking tickets late, lottery tickets, more lottery tickets, failure to recoup debts from friends in a timely manner, etc...

From: [identity profile] gnomi.livejournal.com
I think those are different manifestations of the same Stupid tax.
