I have a very recalcitrant character in my head. I know who he is, how he fits into the thing I'm currently working on, but...he's got 4 potential names. So, I take it to you for a vote. I'm not saying for sure that the majority vote will dictate his name, but it will hopefully help me convince him to pick one already.

One question: is he English? I tend to think of Trevor and Tristan as very English names, so that may make a difference.

My ex-wife went to high school with twins named Trent and Trevor. I'll vote for Trevor and suggest that maybe he has a twin brother.

travis is the guy upstairs who always locks himself out and rings our doorbell (now disconnected for this very reason) daily.

trent=lott.

trevor was the oafish tuba player in high school.

tristan is a lovely name :)

Travis is the creep who Tor was fucking. Trevor is my husband's boss, very IT geeky. :P Tristan is a lovely name.

.... because you needed to know all that.

He's not, but I think one (or both, that's unclear) of his parents is from the UK.

Having reread A Diamond in the Window recently, Trevor is Trevor Nosnibor, the explorer. Tristan is either the younger brother in All Creatures Great and Small or loves Iseult. Trent is a Lott, and Travis sings country.

Without other info than the name choice, I can't decide: all of them are decent names.

Trent is the cute slacker-musician on "Daria". (Or Mr. Reznor.) Trevor is Neville's toad--very very English and kind of wussy. Tristan is the cute slacker-vet from the All Creatures Great And Small books. And Travis is a country singer.

I have a number of students named Trevor and/or Travis, and they all give me headaches. So I vote for Tristan.

In that case, I'm leaning toward Tristan, m'self. :)

Wow...this character having a twin would actually work really well in the story. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've had Magical Trevor stuck in my had for no good reason all morning, so maybe voting for the name will get it out.

Now I've got Magical Trevor stuck in my head. (From the poll, not from Susan.) I voted for Trent-as-in-Reznor.

i went with trent, because it sounds recalcitrant. tristan is to common in fantasy fiction, trevor makes me think of a teenager, and there was a guy in my sixth-grade class named travis who annoyed me and forever ruined the name. of course, there was a really obnoxious guy in high school named trent...

I thought the same thing. I dislike Trent, Trevor, and Travis, in general the names; I don't know any corresponding people). I think Tristan is a very nice name, but I know it as a girls' name, and it means Sadness.
I think Trent says recalcitrant to me because it's fewer syllables than Trevor and Travis.

What kind of person is he?

He's a decent kind of guy, but he's ends up with designs on someone who's already kind of in a relationship (the relationship is, at this point, amorphous in my head...that's part of what I'm working on now). He's a hard worker; he's proud of the work he does.

Does that help?

See my response to [personal profile] jencallisto above. He's a good guy; it's really not his fault that I'm drafting him to be the point of conflict here. :-)

yes, thanks!
definitely trent, then. a little... harder? more real? than the others. tristan's too pretty, trevor and travis are too... er. sensitive new age guy? or, alternatively (and worse), bland with upscale fratboy overtones -- like they'd be Soc's in The Outsiders, or the priviledged sons of CEOs escorting debutantes to balls. i guess they just sound a little useless, in my head. substanceless.

I voted "Trent," for pseudo-linguistic reasons (partly in deference to you, minus the "pseudo"). To me, it sounds most conflict-like.

OK, feels to me like a "Travis"... :-)
