[personal profile] mabfan and I met for lunch today, and while I was waiting for the T back from lunch, I was sitting on a bench on the platform and knitting. I was finishing up a glove finger, and when the train pulled in, I'd set aside my working needle to draw the tail through the remaining 6 stitches. While I was doing this, the train pulled in, so I got up and got onto the train. As soon as the doors closed, I realized I couldn't remember where I'd put my working needle, and I thought I'd heard something fall as I stood up to get on the train. Eh, I thought, it's a plastic double-pointed out of a set of 5. Not a horrible loss, though annoying, since I just bought those double-pointeds.

I get back to my office, get back to my work. After a bit, I realize I want to go talk to [profile] seborn for a moment. I reach up to take off my reading glasses and...

Find the missing needle. Stuck behind my ear. Where it had been for over an hour.

*giggles* dude, usually one loses one's glasses that way, not one's knitting needles...

I lose my glasses (well, either my reading glasses or my regular glasses while wearing my contacts) by sticking them into my pocket.

:-)

I'm a big dork sometimes.

But I'm a fun dork, which -- at least in my mind -- makes up for some of it.

Hey, nothing wrong with being a dork *g*.

Feel no pain, my dear. I once spent twenty minutes looking for a pencil that was between my teeth. Behind the ear? I've done that with crochet hooks more than I care to admit. Most recently, last night.

It's comforting to know it's not just me.

I've misplaced my glasses into my pocket, but in my defense it's only while wearing my contact lenses. Since I'm blind as a bat without my glasses.

I've done that, minus the train, but plus a dinner out.

What kind of restaurant were you at? I am suddenly filled with the image of you knitting pasta...

Boston Pizza, which I understand has no actual ties to Boston and is a Canadian chain... :P Family style place, think Olive Garden.

Nice to know it's not just me.

I don't usually get to knit while out to dinner. Though as [personal profile] farwing and [personal profile] mabfan can attest, I sometimes eye chopsticks with intent to knit. Especially if there's lo mein involved (though I've never yet gotten to the casting-on-with-lo mein stage).

Indeed. In spades.

I so need a "dork" icon.

Ah but you see I tend to see this as a lucky habit (action) or they very well may have been left behind. So you were actually very clever! ;)

At first I thought the punch line was going to be that since the needle was in your hair that meant the glasses had fallen - I'm glad that didn't happen!!

My reading glasses are cheap CVS-bought ones so I don't feel bad if I lose them. Of course, this tends to guarantee that they don't get lost. :-)

And, yeah, sticking things behind my ears is not such a bad habit if it means I don't just leave things on my lap and then lose them when I stand up (which is what I thought had happened with the needle).

I do things like that all the time. I can lose my glasses while wearing them.

I'm too nearsighted to lose my glasses while wearing them. It's a binary function -- either I can see or I can't. Other things -- pens, pencils, and, apparently, knitting needles -- are easy for me to lose while they're actually still attached to my person somehow.

I do that with pens all the time...

I tend to notice pens, since they're usually thicker. This needle has a circumference of 3.5 mm, and was thus completely ignorable until I actually hit it while taking off my reading glasses.

Yeah, I've lost hammers that were attached to my belt the whole time. *sigh*

Countless pens behind the ear, too, and stubs of pencils in shirt pockets.

We're ALL dorks!

Dorks of the world, Unite! We have nothing to lose but...our pens! Our hammers! Our knitting needles!

Oh man! How long will it take to get new glasses?

Actually, I have my glasses. And they're cheap, CVS-purchased reading glasses, since I figure that it's more economical in case I lose them. When I wear my contacts, I need reading glasses for computer work and close work, so that I don't get eyestrain. But how I managed to put on my reading glasses without noticing the knitting needle is a mystery to me.
