This week's Shabbat is, while not unique, unusual: on Shabbat morning, we'll read from 3 Torah scrolls:

1. For the weekly parsha (Miketz)

2. For the Chanukah maftir

3. For the Rosh Chodesh (beginning of the new month) maftir

There is always a Rosh Chodesh during Chanukah. There is always at least one Shabbat during Chanukah. When they fall out together like this, it requires a bit of finessing.

Shabbat shalom, chodesh tov, and chag Chanukah sameach!

There is a custom, I've no idea whose, to make an extra kugel on a shabbat when an extra torah scroll is taken out. So this week there would be three kugels.

Today was also the longest benching (grace after meals) of the year, with the additions for chanukah, shabbat, and rosh chodesh. The only way the benching could have been longer would be if there were also a brit and a sheva brachot (post-wedding party) (each of which occasion special additions to the benching).

Don't forget that last night was chanukah, rosh chodesh, and new years w/ an extra second! How often does that happen?

The last time for an extra second was about 30 yrs ago.
