Oscar-Related Rambly Bits
Mar. 6th, 2006 11:17 am--
mabfan and I watched on TiVo-delay and fast-forwarded through some of the bits that interested us less. Good way to watch, especially for those of us who don't usually watch awards shows.
-- All through the broadcast, the synching was off. It was driving me bonkers, I must say.
-- I liked Jon Stewart as host. He kept the thing moving. Though I'm not sure the Hollywood crowd was, for the most part, ready for him.
-- I didn't really have a horse in any of the races except for Best Documentary Feature and Best Animated Feature. I was all asquee when first Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and then March of the Penguins won. And I loved the little bowties for the W&G Oscars and the giant stuffed penguins brought on stage by the Penguin guys.
-- I'm not usually one to snark about the outfits, but what was Charlize Theron thinking? Beats a butt-bow, yes, but the shoulder-bow thing reminded me too much of a Keeper. Especially when Stewart (I think it was) asked "What do you want?"
-- George Clooney is a class act. I'm just saying.
-- The show ended earlier than we anticipated. This is a good trend, in my view.

And why is it that expensive dresses can look so trashy? What were those designers thinking?
I guess I should rent some of thse films when they come out on DVD. And purchase March of the Penguins.

Date: 2006-03-06 05:36 pm (UTC)I hear you on the Tivo method. We DVRed as well; in fact, we haven't yet finished watching. The best part was when the president guy came out: after about ten seconds I forwarded through him (for a long time) until I saw a lengthy clapping section. I dropped back into play, saw a few more seconds of clapping, and then had to groan when the guy said, "And another thing ...."
A disturbing number of the gowns looked like Project Runway rejects. When did Santino's boob-sling become trendy?
And yes, Clooney owned the night. It seemed odd, but good for him. He played it just right, I thought -- at least until the three-hour mark, where we stopped.

Date: 2006-03-06 06:11 pm (UTC)the penguins and bow ties were indeed squee-worthy, but man, what were some of those women WEARING? not just charlize (was it me or did anyone else think her dress needed to be taken out and shot?) but jessica alba and jennifer garner and naomi watts (who practically disappeared) and even nicole kidman, who i don't like but who always looks good, even she was all washed out and pale. i don't get it. (i didn't like reese witherspoon's dress either. too many silver bits. oy.)
and yeah, george clooney is just a good guy. his was definitely one of the best acceptance speeches.
