Every year, my parents ask what MAB and I want for Channukah, and every year it's hard to come up with an answer. This year, however, MAB had a brilliant idea - there's a new edition out of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, and we've been wanting to get it, so we thought it would be a lovely gift. My parents said sure, and then went on to say that we could just go to Barnes and Noble and buy it for ourselves, on their credit card.

(Brief aside - when I went off to college, my parents got me a credit card in my name on one of their accounts, for use "in emergencies only." This eventually morphed into "to buy stuff that we want to get you but don't have the time or opportunity to do the shopping for." Over the years, we've talked about cancelling my card on this account, but we keep finding instances - such as this gift thing - in which having a card on which I can charge things to my parents' account. Other uses for it include when my mother asks me to go to the Israel Book Shop and buy them things - this way, they don't have to remember to pay me back, and I just have to remember to deliver the things that I purchased.)

So last night, after work, MAB and I went and bought ourselves a copy of Bartlett's. And somehow (I honestly don't remember how the conversation got there, but with us it could've been anything) we got to talking about President Bartlet (from The West Wing) and whether someone should put together Bartlet's Familiar Quotations. And I went to sleep last night and woke up with the idea that maybe I should make such a compendium of quotes that, perhaps, President Bartlet might collect. This project will allow me to combine two of my obsessions - The West Wing (which, despite last season, I still believe has some of the best writing on television) and word-nerdiness.

Therefore, if anyone out there has suggestions for quotations for this compendium, please let me know, either here or by e-mail. This will probably be an ongoing project to be housed on my website.

OK, after reading a bunch of OVFF trip reports from friends and friends-of-friends, I'm gonna have to ask: Raise your hand if you saw Becky, Harold, and Aaron Feld at OVFF.

OK, now raise your hand if you knew that Becky Feld is my sister.

Thank you.
