***Warning***: Unrepentant fangirling here; no bashing of any team will be permitted.

I have been a Red Sox fan since the early 1970s; I went to my first Sox game when I was under 5 years old, and we sat in the bleachers (where tickets were $1) and had a grand old time at Fenway (somewhere in the depths of my archives, I have a program book bought with saved-up allowance money from the 1975 Red Sox season). I've followed this team through highs and lows, through strong seasons and weak seasons, through on-field and off-field scandals. And I adore them.

Over the years, I've learned that a good spring usually means that the team will fall apart somewhere around August but a bad spring is usually good news. And this year was really no exception. This team was just barely over 500 (at 48-38), and they were 7 games (I think) out of first place at the All-Star break. Things looked rather bleak. So, for me, the team getting to the end of the season with a winning record would've been enough -- dayenu.

But not only did they have a winning record, they made it to the Wild Card. Had they lost to Anaheim in 3 straight games, I would've been sad, but it would've been enough -- dayenu.

But they won the Wild Card series against Anaheim and made it to the ALCS. And for a while it looked like that would be the end. But just making it, just getting to the ALCS, would've been enough -- dayenu.

They've made it to Game 7 of the ALCS against the Yankees, who have been, for a number of years now, the team to beat in the American League. Baseball in October in Boston would've been enough -- dayenu.

If the Sox lose tonight, it won't be for lack of heart, and it won't be because they didn't play the best baseball that they could. So...no matter what happens tonight, I'm a proud member of Red Sox Nation, and I will continue to love my team.

So today I went to the Kendall Square PO to mail a book (Divided by a Common Language) to [personal profile] byrne, and the postal clerk warned me that he could not estimate how long the book would take to arrive because Canada does not have a national postal service. And my reaction was huh?, because I'd never heard that before. Is this true? Does Canada have separate postal services for each province? If so, how does postage work? I mean, does each province also determine how much they charge for postage?

Inquiring Massachusetts natives wanna know!
