Am I Really That Odd?
Aug. 30th, 2006 11:01 amOK, yeah, I am. But in this case, I'm not so sure. Here's the deal. At the aforementioned family gathering, I was talking to a cousin I don't see very often, and we were trading e-mail addresses. I gave her one of my "social-business" cards (not to be confused with any of my various business-business cards) and commented that the e-mail address on the card was the best of my multiple e-mail addresses to use. And my cousin was shocked to hear that I had multiple e-mail addresses. But as I count them, I have six:
-- one at sff.net (my "default" address for sending mail)
-- one at world.std.com/theworld.com (not used very much, but still gets e-mail)
-- one at my_real_name.com (where, for instance, my LJ mail goes)
-- one at asknomi.com (where a lot of list mail goes and the one I use for replying to feedback)
-- one at the Press (for Press business)
-- one at work-work (for work-work business)
So, am I a complete freak for having 6 e-mail addresses?

Date: 2006-08-30 03:12 pm (UTC)Of course, maybe that makes me a freak for having six myself! But I can't imagine actively keeping up with six active accounts -- I have enough trouble with one! -- so maybe I'll say you are a freak after all. But the good kind. :>

Date: 2006-08-30 03:19 pm (UTC)postdiluvian and porklips are the same machine, so that's really one. Then I have gmail, fastmail.fm, a Gillette account... I think I still have an Aquent account although I forget the login, and I can think of accounts on two other friends' machines that I never use. Oh, and Yahoo. That's seven, although only three that I use regularly.

About One Hundred and Eighty
Date: 2006-08-30 10:01 pm (UTC)Any time a business or a conference asks me for an email address, I generate one just for them. I add it to my domain, and I can shut it off if they misbehave. I can also tell who it is that misbehaves by loking at the "To:" address, because each one is unique.
For example, Microcenter Warehouse not only sent me spam, but let the email address leak out, presumeably via a virus, to more disgusting spammers. I turned it off.
I may have to turn off the address that Livejournal currently uses and replace it, since it has attracted spam.
One of the things I said at Cluecon during my impromptu talk is that I one day hope to have hundreds of phone numbers, too. It's in fact fairly easy to do...

Date: 2006-08-31 01:18 am (UTC)The system is a bit complex, as you might imagine, but in the end I have a very nice system that gives me privacy and control. Oh, and if I fill out a form that asks for my snail mail address, I give 'em a room number that corresponds to the email address... so I can tell who's been naughty and sold my address.

Date: 2006-09-06 06:24 am (UTC)1) my work address, this is the one I used for 95% of stuff
2) my dialup account's that I keep even though I now have broadband, address. I used this as my "throwaway" account because the spam filters were so inadequate it seemed useless unless you were using outlook 2003 or thunderbird with the inteligent spam filters that you know, actually filtered AND MOVED spam to a spam folder.
3) my broadband account's address. Looked at it less than six times...don't remember the password and haven't opened it since I rebuilt my machine...I guess I should try to find the password, huh.
4) my yahoo address. I still like yahoo as a free account over gmail or hotmail. I actually use this account for storing stuff I might need on the road as I know I can access it from "anywere"
5) a "sub-account" I used when I was trolling Amazon and didn't want lousy job offerers to have my "real account". I get 1 address from dialup along with 5 "free" addresses. Most of those "free" addresses are used by various family members, but I still had room for one or more "throwaway" addresses.
So basically I have 3 addresses I use on a regular basis, 1 sub-account I used for a while, and 1 account I can't even remember the password.
I guess you win!
