i could only choose one, but actually it's both/either gave the finger and flipped the bird. it depends. on what, exactly, i don't know. context? whim?

Actually, I just made a famous hand gesture, courtesy of Dave Barry. But if asked to specify the hand gesture, I would say I gave him the finger.

I also have "flipped him off" which is the same as "flipped him the bird" and "gave him the finger".

I agree with all the other multiple-choice commenters. It is giving the finger, flipping the bird, flipping them off, and probably dozens of other things...

Also, it's not clever to do in traffic, because already unbalanced people get surprisingly angry when you fire them the one-gun salute.

Also, random factoid: my great-uncle was Admiral Byrd's expedition radio operator, and one of the "Knights of the Gray Underwear" who used to do impromptu compositions for mouth harp and tin can during radio broadcasts from the Antarctic.

I chose "Gave Him the Finger," but would also have selected "Flipped Him the Bird" or "Flipped Him Off." "Flipped Him the Finger" maybe, but not "Gave him the Bird."

yup, that's what i think, too. i probably personally say "flipped [person] off" or "gave [person] the finger" more than "flipped [person] the bird," but the latter is still certainly acceptable.

I couldn't answer the poll. I would have wanted to select two of the choices for Question #1 (the first two) and "other" or "none of above" (if it would have been available) for the second question.
