Background: [profile] beckyfeld is in Israel with [personal profile] osewalrus, A, and the Pearlman parent people. She and I have been IMing periodically during their stay. Conversation turned to Pesach cleaning, biur chametz, and the fact that the family will be in Maine for Pesach this year.

(This may not make much sense to most people at first glance. Poke me for any explanations you need.)

[personal profile] gnomi: We could always throw it into the ocean, thus combining biur chametz and tashlich.
[profile] beckyfeld: :-)
[personal profile] gnomi: I have a new chumra for the Chumra of the Month Club, I think -- Tashlich Chametz.
[profile] beckyfeld: Maybe it's not Tashlich, but toiveling...
[personal profile] gnomi: T'vilat chametz?
[profile] beckyfeld: Maybe in order to eat chametz on Pesach you need to toivel it first...

So all those people who're worried about bread falling into a reservoir (and therefore draw lots of water in advance to bittul any chametz in the water) are just in the wrong Chumra of the Month club....

Actually, ME and I have the custom to use leftover matzah from pesach for Tashlich. When you combine that with using the lulav for igniting the fire to burn the chametz you cover almost the entire year.

I have no idea what's going on, but anyone who can have that much fun playing with the language of their religion is pretty awesome.

There's a lot of technical terminology in that conversation, which is why I put the "this may not make sense" warning. In short, my sister and I were jokingly discussing the possibility that if one submerges leavened bread, one would be able to eat it on Passover.

This time of year especially, this sort of playing with religious terminology is common and even encouraged.

So is that the opposite of gebrochts? ;-)
