-- Staples' coupon for their Ink Sweepstakes made me giggle -- "Buy ink or toner! No purchase necessary!"

-- A minor numismatic Grrr: I've been collecting the 50 State Quarters from the beginning. On Wednesday, I got a couple of Montanas as change. However, I still haven't gotten my hands on a South Dakota.

-- The band Say Anything must have at least one Jewish member. I say this based solely on the lyrics of their current song getting radio play (warning: sexual content in lyrics)

-- I'm pondering heading out to Somerville next Saturday night after Shabbat to see if I can meet people in town for the Jamboree.

-- A fun YouTube link: The Yiddish Alef Bet Song (with Hebrew subtitles)

-- I have recently acquired a cool new toy (well, it's on its way to me, so I shall acquire it Real Soon Now) that will allow me to rip cassettes and vinyl discs to mp3. Since I have a record player and a cassette player and many, many instances of music on either cassette or vinyl, this new gadget will get much use.

-- With thanks to [livejournal.com profile] betra, who showed me her copy, I have now acquired a copy of Love and Knishes, a Jewish cookbook that came out in 1956. There is, apparently, an updated version that came out in 1997, but there's something special about an older version.

-- A new-to-me word, introduced to me by my mother: Spoliation. I like this word a lot. It has a good mouth-feel. And extra points to my mother for not laughing at me when I told her that I liked the word because of its mouth-feel.

-- An observation: When I want junk food, eating a clementine, no matter how tasty the clementine, is not going to slake my desire for junk.

OMG i need one of those gadgets. need need NEED! the last time i went looking, all i could find was one that only worked for cassetes: you would pop the cassette right in, not use your own deck. ptooey.

i used to love making mixtapes. now i make mixCDs...but without access to most of my older stuff that they haven't bothered releasing on CD. heh. i see many hours of song-tetris enjoyement in my future! :)

I believe I have an extra SD. Wanna trade?

I have a ton of cassettes of stuff that was never released on CD, plus a ton of vinyl from when I was a kid. [personal profile] mabfan has a bunch of vinyl, as well. And I'd been looking for something to do the cassettes (I'd found a three-step process for converting cassettes to mp3, but it was a hassle). So I jumped at this when I found it.

Sure! I have a spare MT I could trade you...

(While spending postage to mail a quarter seems a bit odd, I'm up for it if you are.)

Ooh shiny!
My parents have all these records of early Israeli music that I would be more than happy to share if you would use your new toy to rip them to mp3. *smiles winningly* (I've also got my grandmother's Theodore Bikel collection.)

Please let me know how the ripping device works - I've been doing that by hand for a few years now.

i'm enough of an audiophile that i don't want to convert to MP3 unless i'm putting it on my (creative zen) nano or my laptop. i can hear the difference between MP3 and CDA, and it bothers me. MP3 is basically for when i'm using cheapie earbuds that squash that difference.

my vinyl reaches as close as a few years ago (tho its content is pretty much all from my college days) thanks to the used record shops chicago boasts. and lest you think i'm a music-luddite/purist, you probably don't want to know how many CDs i own. ;)

Also - the tape / vinyl converter doohicky is just *so nifty*.

It's a great price for what you get. I'm so looking forward to being able to listen to some of the music I've been missing for years.

I definitely shall. I've got the "do it by hand" procedure, but I've never actually done it due to how cumbersome it seems.

The song's getting a lot of airplay on my local alternative station; if I come across a source for it, I'll let you know.

And it is a nifty device. I'm looking forward to using it. :-)

That'd be great; I don't think I have Montana. And hey, it may seem silly but it'll give me an excuse to use one of the R2D2 mailboxes!

i have at least one south dakota. i'm missing a 2006 quarter but already have a montana. huh.

also i'm all for you coming to somerville next weekend to try and hang out with folks who are here for the jamboree. i was just thinking about it last night and wondering when it was.

Actually, the turntable (which has its own built in tape deck) is in my parents' house. I have a separate tape deck, as well, which is in our place (and which I use for playing "chopping music" when I'm doing large quantities of cooking).

Which 2006 are you missing?

I've got a line on an SD, so now I'm good ([profile] ghilledhu has a spare and needs an MT, of which I have a spare).

I take it you're not signed up for the Jamboree. You wanna come with me to find folks to say hi?

Date: 2007-03-23 04:19 pm (UTC)

ah. :)

another use for the gadget came to mind. it's got RCA jacks, which means it could also go into my vcr/dvd player...endless supply of dialogue-snippet WAV files for windows-events, anyone?! muahaha...

I looked up the band members. Just judging by the names, a couple of the current members MIGHT be Jewish, and some of the former ones almost CERTAINLY are.

And I am buying one of those gadgets RIGHT NOW.

What tipped me off was the lyric that mentions the "old shul." That's terminology that's really not used by non-Jews.

And that gadget is proving to be extremely popular amongst my friends list. I'll be posting a report when I've tested it out.

I definitely will; I anticipate testing it out on the night it arrives and then posting a report the next day.

I've been looking for this sort of functionality for a while to deal with my old cassettes. The fact that the gadget handles vinyl, as well, is an added bonus.

the wav i've wanted for my windows startup SINCE BEFORE THE MOVIE WAS IN THE THEATER (because the line was used in the commercials):

"mornin', boys!"
"hi, K!"
"that isn't decaf is it?"
"viennese cinnamon."

(this of course is from the first Men In Black movie)

i've actually found several versions online, but they all cut off before the decaf question. which to me is key.

I'm still curious, but...

G's family bought me a birthday present (like yours, it's en route) of a Griffen Technology 9066-IMIC2 iMic/USB Audio Interface and a TEAC W-600R Double Cassette Deck Recorder/Player. I'm guessing it won't do vinyl, but then any vinyl I once had is still at my parents' if it didn't break in one of the moves over the years.
