I'm still working through an incident from work. Please bear with me.

Yesterday morning I ran out to do an errand before my 10:30 meeting. When I got back, I tossed my purse (which I'd taken with me) behind my backpack and headed off to my meeting. Then, at about 4:55, when I was getting ready to go home, I noticed that my wallet was half-in and half-out of the pocket of my purse where it lives. I was somewhat freaked, but after talking it through with MAB, I realized that I had most likely pulled it out to grab something quickly and then not put it back completely. I hadn't had any memory of doing so, but seeing how swamped I was yesterday with work and meetings, it was quite possible. And since, on inspection, nothing appeared to be missing, I just filed it away as Nomi brain weirdness.

So today I'm sitting in my cube listening to music, and when the CD I'm listening to comes to an end, I can hear part of a conversation going on in the cube to my right. Turns out that my next-cube neighbor had some cash taken from her wallet yesterday. I tell her of my discovery last night, and she recommends that we both go talk to HR, which we did. On the way to HR, she tells me that someone else in her department had her desk vandalized yesterday. I go to HR and tell our main HR guy what's happened, and he asks if it's OK if he sends someone over from building security to take a statement (I said yes, though I was feeling strange about it since nothing was actually taken).

On my way back to my desk, I tried to drop by and talk to my manager, just to tell her about the incident, but she was on the phone. She pantomimed that she'd call me at my desk once she was off the phone. When she called me about 10 minutes later, I told her what happened, and she informed me that her wallet - all of it - had been taken yesterday in the same time frame that I'd been away from my desk (she and I were in the same meeting at 10:30 yesterday morning). So that was now 4 people who had been hit.

Security came by and took my (meager) statement. I even told him that I felt strange because nothing had actually been taken, but he just smiled and said I should consider myself lucky. Everyone who was hit reported being away from their desk around the same time, so that's when it must've happened. And he had me show him my wallet, to see whether the thief (or, in my case, potential thief) couldn't see my cash fast enough to grab it without being seen, but he noted just how obvious it would've been to take, so we both posited that (since my cube is on the corner of two aisles) the thief was scared away before he or she could complete their attempted robbery of me. He had me do a quick visual scan of my wallet again, and yet again I didn't notice any credit cards or cash missing. I did notice that my Barnes & Noble discount card was gone, but it turns out that MAB still has it in his wallet (I'd remarked to the security guy that it would be really pathetic if a thief had ransacked my purse and all they took was my B&N card).

So now I'm sitting here in my cube, slightly twitchy and determined to take my backpack with me whenever I leave my cube for the rest of the week (and probably longer).
