So, on Sunday, in and among everything else that we did, I went to a Sisterhood meeting at our shul at which the activity was beading your own bracelet. And I had a really good time doing it. A really good time. So much so that I started thinking beading thoughts. But I don't need a new hobby. I really don't.

And then The Oriental Trading Company sent me a catalog of beads. Including penguin beads. And that little voice in my head said, "Penguin earrings! You could make penguin earrings!"

But I don't need a new hobby...

but maybe I want one? I'm still thinking thoughts of taking up spinning, as well.

Oooh! Could you make me one? I mean, once you've given in and decided it's a hobby? :) I'm so bad at crafts but I love beaded bracelets. I'd trade a poem on the subject of your choice for it.

could you knit beads into your sweaters and gloves? cuz then it wouldn't really be a new hobby, it'd just be an update of an old hobby.

Oh, come on, you know you want to! And there's plenty of room for new addicts over here in the beading corner. It's just so nicely portable, and depending on the project it makes for almost immediate gratification (sit down for an hour and you've got a lovely new necklace) or a really nice, slow burn (right now I'm working on a beaded wall hanging with a huge, coiled snake at the center). I'm hoping the wall hanging'll be done sometime before the end of the year. Maybe. If I don't change my mind again about what I'm doing with the border.

You totally can do this. You can also make jewelry by crocheting or knitting very soft wire.

oh wow!

my mom used to get OTC's catalog for being a teacher. they have/had tons of cheap stuff that make great rewards for her kids. i had no idea they've expanded in the years since.

beading is already a hobby of mine. :)

I'd go in on some beads with you if you'd like. I had a great time on Sunday as well and got a lot of complements on my new baubles. Plus, we can keep each other in check so we don't get too carried away.....

Or you could get the beads and then talk someone (who belongs to your once-and-i-hope-future sewing circle) who already has tools and other needful supplies into making the earrings for you. :)

Had I known you were going to go, I'd have asked you to motzi me. I got all kinds of harassment, even after I pointed to the kids.

Does that actually work with you guys? Because I find, with things like cloth for sewing, that when I'm with someone else, we feed off one another's greed and say things like, "Well, of course you should buy it; you can figure out later what you want to make with it."

Yeah, I was gonna offer to do that. I'd totally go in on an order of the beads, too. [livejournal.com profile] hakamadare is way penguin-crazed. We just got a new pattern for the penguin shower curtain, and hand-painted penguin curtain hooks, too. :)

is this too enabling?

Um, I've made earrings for self & others, have basic tools, and know where (local to me) to find parts that would turn those beads into earrings...

Just remember not to let them appoint you Sisterhood President, because then you get an automatic seat on the Synagogue Board of Directors.

Beading takes up less space than spinning.

True.... more often than not, one of my friends and I go a bit crazy when we shop together for things. At some point, one of will say "do we really need this?" but we'll ultimately buy it anyway :) At least we make an attempt to be reasonable!

We should do that! Find a Sunday that we could go to Harvard Square or other places with bead shops. ::nods sagely::

Sometimes, at least when [personal profile] gem225 and I go yarn shopping. One will tell the other something like, "That's lovely yarn, but you already have something like it in your stash. Do you really need it?"

It was [personal profile] gem225 with whom I was shopping when I had to safeword in the yarn shop.

Heee! That is a lovely offer. Thanks!

I had a really good time actually doing the handwork, though, so I think some of the draw is not just the designing but also the actual making.

Actually, I'm not completely convinced of that. The roving is bulky, true, but a drop spindle is relatively compact, and one can just as easily fill lots and lots and lots of space with beads and other baubles.

The procurement of supplies and beads around here is, alas, way too easy. I was distracted yesterday by books about beading, which is often a first step for me. I'm going to get a bunch from the library, see whether the bug keeps biting me.

I wasn't sure, honestly, until Sunday morning. I'd given Cheryl a tentative "yes," but I wasn't 100% committed to going until I got up on Sunday.

I've never bought from OTC, but they've got lots of stuff that is appealing.

Beading seems to be popular amongst my friends. Enablers, every one of you!

Enabler!

I'm starting with the longing-looks-at-beads stage and getting books from the library about jewelry making. If the desire still is with me after that stage, then I'll branch into the buying-supplies stage.

I could. In fact, one of the knitting magazines I subscribe to has had some knitting-with-beads articles in the recent past.

I could, indeed.

I should photograph the one I made on Sunday, so you can see what started this line of inquiry.
