Cider Vinegar: Ideal for Food!
Cider Vinegar: Ideal for Food!

-- A coworker of mine does rock climbing as a hobby. He did a presentation at a lunch-and-learn a while ago about the climbing, and in the midst of it he mentioned how wonderful merino wool is. Since I am currently working in merino (Debbie Bliss Merino Aran, for those who understand what that means) (I'm making gloves that I will post about as soon as I have more than just my one prototype glove), I showed him what merino looks like in ball form (rather than in clothing form). And it made me wonder how frequently people find the juncture between knitters and rock climbers, conversationwise. (It's probably pretty frequent, given the interest both have in quality fabric production.)

-- As discussion of this year's early (11 March 2012) Hugo nomination deadline heats up, I've been seeing a lot of references to "Hugo nom deadline." This made me wonder if it was the deadline for chomping on Hugos. (Om nom nom!)

-- Blechy, rainy weather today. Blech. Still beats snow.

-- Cool video seen on the ABE Books blog: Dancing Books (link to YouTube video)

-- Squeaker decided my outfit today, having rejected the outfit I'd originally laid out. Mind you, this was *my* clothing, not *hers*.

-- Muffin was ill earlier this week, but she's doing fine now. Moral of the story? Muffin should eat blueberries more deliberately and with forethought.

-- There are still two slots available in the handcrafts meme I posted a couple of days ago.

From [livejournal.com profile] puppetmaker40:

I promise* will do my best to make something handmade for the first five people who comment. They must are encouraged* in turn post this and make something for the first five people who comment on their status. The rules are it has to be handmade by you and they must receive it before 2012 ends...who's in with me?!

*I changed this from the original because I feel uncomfortable promising in case I default, and I don't like making people participate in memes if they don't want to. Also, I'm interpreting "handmade" liberally.

(and it's not even Festivus)

I'll start:

Center-pull balls that don't. I shouldn't have to stop in the middle of my sock to untangle the gob of yarn that just spewed forth.

Grrrr!

-- It's grey and in the 40s today; tomorrow is supposed to be rainy and in the high 60s. Don'tcha just *love* Spring in New England?

-- Speaking of Spring in New England, trees hate me, and it's mutual. ::blows nose some more::

-- Had a good and productive weekend (not all at the same time, necessarily): Quiet Shabbat, slightly less quiet Sunday, what with the brunch-with-friends, cleaning-for-Passover, bringing-stuff-to-storage, more-Passover-cleaning, laundry-doing and all. And it was my Abba's birthday, so I spoke to him twice (which is odd for me on a Sunday; Sunday is usually the day I typically *don't* speak to the parental units).

-- I've been knitting like a crazed fiend (even more crazed than usual). Made more progress on my big project, finished three small projects, worked on another smallish project.

-- Still haven't pulled out the sewing machine in a while. I need to do that, 'cause I have cut-out projects in progress I *really* want to finish.

-- May be baking more in the next week or two, in an attempt to lessen the amount of flour and sugar I have on hand. There's that Passover-planning thing again...

-- Streaming audio hasn't worked for me at work for over a week. This is sad. I'm listening to CDs rather than the radio and rediscovering some of the stuff I'd forgotten I had in my CD collection here in Cubeville. Now I'm on a "reorganize my Cubeville CDs" kick. Let's see: just this one CD rack can be Jewish a cappella (pro), Jewish a cappella (collegiate), English-language a cappella (pro), English-language a cappella (collegiate), and I'm already out of space.

-- I took the quiz at glassbooth.org, and I'm not sure I agree with their assessment of who I should vote for. It's an oddly limited number of questions they ask, which makes assessing my politics (which lean fiscally conservative but socially liberal) really hard.

-- I keep planning posts in my head, but for one reason or another they don't seem to make it to the screen.

-- I owe at least one person a language poll; I'll try to get it done by the end of the weekend, if not before.

-- Speaking of the screen, [personal profile] mabfan and I finally got our anniversary gift of the full series of Stargate: SG-1 on DVD. We've been checking each DVD to make sure it plays well. This tends to mean running through the eps on fast-forward, but I've been stopping to rewatch random episodes here and there. I'm up to season 4, so last night I rewatched "Small Victories," "Crossroads," "Divide and Conquer," "Chain Reaction," and "2010" ([personal profile] mabfan was out at Town Meeting, and I was crawling around on the living room floor).

-- Why was I crawling around on the floor last night? Well... it has to do with those things one learns from one's parents that one does even when one feels like a goofball doing so. I am making [profile] lcmlc a skirt, and when she first taught me to sew (when I was about 14 or so), she taught me the value of ironing the paper pattern pieces before cutting. She also taught me the value of Do-Sew or the functional equivalent, and since my best cutting surface is our living room floor, I was crawling around tracing out the pattern pieces in the proper size for [profile] lcmlc and then cutting out the resulting pieces. Tonight, I'll preshrink the fabric and (with luck) cut it out.

-- This time of year, Shabbat starts crazy-late. This leads to extreme laziness on the part of the [personal profile] gnomi. What I mean is, in the winter, when Shabbat comes in at 3:53 PM, I do all my cooking Wednesday night and Thursday night. This time of year, when Shabbat comes in after 8:00 PM, I get lazy and sometimes (such as this week) don't even start my cooking until Friday afternoon. Today? There will be much pre-Shabbat flail.

-- Today is the 103rd anniversary of the General Slocum disaster. [personal profile] mabfan has a post with more info.

-- This morning, I read the obituary of Guy de Rothschild, the great-great grandson of Mayer Rothschild and the grandson of the youngest of Mayer's children, James(AKA Jacob, I believe).

-- Overwhelmingly, people think I should get both types of penguin beads. Thanks to all who voted.

So, on Sunday, in and among everything else that we did, I went to a Sisterhood meeting at our shul at which the activity was beading your own bracelet. And I had a really good time doing it. A really good time. So much so that I started thinking beading thoughts. But I don't need a new hobby. I really don't.

And then The Oriental Trading Company sent me a catalog of beads. Including penguin beads. And that little voice in my head said, "Penguin earrings! You could make penguin earrings!"

But I don't need a new hobby...

but maybe I want one? I'm still thinking thoughts of taking up spinning, as well.
