...in the month of Tishrei starts tonight: Sukkot.

This Sukkot is different for [personal profile] mabfan and me for one major reason: [profile] lcmlc and Abba are spending the holiday down with [profile] beckyfeld, [personal profile] osewalrus, and A., and we're staying in Brookline. And since we live on the 3rd floor and have nowhere to build our own sukkah, we're having all our meals out. I did some cooking, since one of the meals is potluck, but the amount of cooking I had to do for this yom tov is much less than I usually have to do (and that I'll likely end up doing for Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah next week (though we're already invited out for two meals next week).

Lulav and etrog and machzorim for the yom tov have all been acquired.

Chag sameach to all who are celebrating Sukkot.

I leave you with...Rules of the Sukkah, by Rabbi Arthur E. Gould.

Heh. That's a great little summary of the rules. Hoe you have a wonderful holiday. I'm going to my friend Deb 's place tonight and I can't wait. It's been a long time since I've celebrated Sukkot properly. Yay!

Chag sammeach!

Last year we went to Kadimah during the day. I'm not sure what our plans are for this year.

Chag Sameach. Any idea how I can get a sukkah invitation for a 14 year old Jewish boy whose previous exposure to Judaism has been watching "Let my rugrats go"? He lives in Somerville and can get around via the T.

Do you particularly want him in a family sukkah? Tremont St. offers sit-down kiddush in its sukkah after davening.

I don't think that a 3 hour mostly hebrew service is the best way to kick off his introduction to Judaism. I want him to eat a meal in a sukkah, wave a lulav, have a shabbat dinner, dance on Simchat Torah etc rather than sit in a seat reading a prayerbook all morning.

Advice and suggestions welcome.

Um, he doesn't have to sit through services to attend kiddush (lots of grown-ups don't... :-). And there will likely be people there willing to temporarily give him their lulav to wave. And Tremont St. gets the street closed off Simchat Torah night to accommodate the 100s of dancing people, which is pretty cool.

Which is to say, I have a sukkah in Cambridge, but it would feel very strange to me to invite a 14-yr-old without someone else he already knows, especially to a meal with few other guests....

I agree about the awkwardness - I've mostly been talking with people I already know about this. Attending just the kiddush is an interesting idea - I'll think about that and see if one of my local friends who is a TBS regular would look after him.

I'm already discussing with him if he'd like to go to either TBS or TBB(*) for Simchat Torah. I can get him an escort to TBB - no luck yet with TBS.

TBB = Temple Bnai Brith

Really, gnomi, if you were feeling so cooking-deprived, why didn't you just say so? We had (er...have) plenty of yom tov cooking to do around here.

Also, not living on the ground floor is no excuse for not building a sukkah.

And, finally, your potluck meal may very well be taking place indoors. Have you seen the forecast?
