How does one Kasher something?

There's usually heat involved. So...

-- To kasher the stove, I set the burners on full flame until the burner grates heat up to the point that paper singes when touched to the grate

-- To kasher the oven, I turn it to its highest temperature and run it for an hour and a half.

-- To kasher the microwave, I put a glass measuring cup of water into the microwave and run the microwave for 20 minutes (ten minutes, then move cup and zap another 10 minutes).

-- To kasher the sink, since my sink is stainless steel (and therefore easy to kasher) I boil a kettle full of water and pour the boiling water all over all surfaces of the sink.

To render something kosher, to make it usable according to Jewish dietary laws.

Thank you! It's a lot of work, preparing for the holiday, but it makes the holiday more special, in my mind, to do real work to reach it.

It's a lot like parts of spring cleaning. However, since one only has to clean areas that may have had chametz (leavened food) in them, there's really no need to clean the closets you haven't opened since last spring cleaning or whatever. Therefore, I try to remind myself to concentrate on food areas and not to stress about places where we never eat/bring food (such as our home office and our bedroom).
