Biur Chametz... or Not
Apr. 18th, 2008 11:26 amSo, this morning, as has become my tradition,
mabfan and I headed up to the fire station in Brighton to burn our chametz (it's a weird year because the first seder is Saturday night but you can't burn things on Shabbat, so we do the burning today, and there's a machloket (disagreement) as to whether you say the "Kol Chamira" (the nullification formula) today or tomorrow). But, lo and behold, there were no folks with the traditional fire-filled barrels. We looked around confusedly, and then I saw that coming down the hill was a guy I knew, also clearly there with the intent of burning his chametz. We wandered around the parking lot where the burning usually is done, but no one appeared. So, after some discussion and thought, we decided to throw the chametz into the dumpster (which will be taken away and the contents "destroyed" today) and say the nullification formula (with the mental intention that, in fact, we will be eating chametz until tomorrow morning), because the haggadah I had with me (the standard yellow-with-goat one) said to say the Kol Chamira on the 13th if the first day of the holiday fell on Saturday night.
So, alas, no burnination. With luck, the burninators will reappear next year.
Now that the chametz is taken care of, all that's left is taking down the last of the trash, and then packing and heading out to my parents' for Shabbat and yom tov. Because I will be offline from this afternoon through Monday night, I highly doubt I'll get caught up with LJ after the holiday.
Chag kasher v'sameach to everyone celebrating, and everyone else, have a good weekend!
