Rambly Bits, Weekend Roundup Edition
May. 5th, 2008 10:35 am-- Had guests for both meals on Shabbat. Was much fun. People ate lots. We still have lots and lots of baked ziti left (because I made two pans, lest we not have enough food).
-- Am going to make another pot of corn chowder tonight, for eating the rest of the week. No particular reason other than it's tasty and we like it.
-- To ponder: does corn bread go with corn chowder, or is it too much corn all in one place.
-- Note: chocolate carrot cake makes excellent cupcakes. Also note: having folks frost their own (bringing the container of cream cheese frosting to the table) is an excellent idea all around. And it prompts people to randomly eat the frosting. Further note: making the frosting in a Gladware container was good decision.
-- Watched "The Specials" on Saturday night, borrowed from
xiphias and
cheshyre. Was cute movie. Still liked "Mystery Men" better.
-- Sunday, saw "Iron Man." Highly recommended. If you go, do stay through the credits. It's worth it. Trust me.
-- Sunday afternoon spent mostly editing. Got lots done, still some to finish up.
-- Now back in office. Cannot type "None" without almost typing "Nomi." Fingers clearly trained.

Date: 2008-05-05 03:54 pm (UTC)BEGIN HUMOR
Having them together is no problem, but if you need to transport them, you should use a corn ethanol based vehicle :)
END HUMOR
Humor tag for the ethanol obsessed. PBS has been doing a lot of shows on ethanol. Apparently corn ethanol, while great for politically influential corn farmers, is actually not the best ethanol to be using from either a "get away from oil" standpoint or a "doesn't hurt the environment" standpoint. This PSA brought to you by the (mumble) Fund, The (mumble C. mumble) Foundtion...
And by viewers like you. Thank you!

Date: 2008-05-05 05:18 pm (UTC)And the chowder recipe is adapted from James Beard. It goes something like this:
1-2 cans corn (or 1 package frozen corn, defrosted)
1 can cream-style corn (if desired)
4 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
2-3 medium onions, peeled and chopped
salt, freshly ground pepper to taste (or replace salt with 1 tsp. lemon jc.)
2 cups light cream or evaporated milk (1 can evaporated milk good for 6 quarts of soup)
pinch of thyme
paprika
Cook the potatoes in boiling water until just cooked but still firm (about 10-15 minutes for 1/2 inch pieces). Boil away some of the water, but keep rest for soup stock. Saute onions in 1 Tbps oil until golden and limp, but don't allow to brown. Add to potatoes and potato water. Bring to boil, lower heat, and simmer 5-10 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper, then add the cream or evaporated milk. Add corn and creamed corn, then heat through. Add thyme right before serving. Sprinkle on paprika to individual bowls at serving time.

Date: 2008-05-06 01:40 am (UTC)I know what you mean. I had 5 people over for dinner and made what seemed like an appropriate amount of lamb stew. It was 3 times as much as needed! After eating it for many meals and having a friend over for lunch, my lucky dogs got the last bits.
