So [personal profile] mabfan and I met for lunch downtown (as is our usual pattern for Tuesday), and as we're walking back to the T along Tremont St., we pass a tour group being led by a woman in Colonial garb. Just as we pass, she starts leading them in song:

"My country, 'tis of thee/Sweet land of liberty/Of thee I sing."

As we pass, I sing -- not softly, but not loudly, either, and [personal profile] mabfan joins in -- "Send her victorious/Happy and glorious/Long to reign o'er us/God save the Queen."

We then sang the next stanza ("Oh, Lord our God arise/Scatter her enemies/And make them fall./Confound their politics/Frustrate their knavish tricks/On thee our hopes we fix/God save us all") as we headed across Park St. to the T.

Hip, hip, HOORAY!
Hip, hip, HOORAY
Hip, hip, HOORAY

And did those feet,
In ancient times,
Walk upon England's mountains green?

Somehow, I knew you'd have an icon of the Queen. :-)

I seem to remember recently-ish getting into a discussion in your comments about "God Save the Queen."

That song makes me think of E. L. Konigsburg's The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place.

Yes, I thought so!

I've been there once, as there are not a lot of choices in Boston!

You've got it wrong

The title of your post should have been: "In which [livejournal.com profile] gnomi is AWESOME."

I have to say, my brain went first to Eddie Izzard

"Not God save the Queen! God attack the Queen! Send dogs to bite her ..."

Now I hate my brain.

Doesn't sound like troublemaking to me, maybe audience participation...

Well, it's troublemaking because I was supporting our former colonial status while the tourguide was talking about our independence.

The curse to "confound [our] politics" definitely worked.
