Welcome to the [personal profile] gnomiverse!

[personal profile] gnomi
I've picked up a bunch of new readers round these parts recently, so I figured it was about time to rerun the "General Guide to the [personal profile] gnomiverse" post (now updated and expanded! And 20% more expensive for a slightly smaller box!).

Things One Should Know About [personal profile] gnomi:

-- I'm originally from Burlington, Massachusetts.
-- I have the following relatives that hang out on LJ with varying levels of regularity: [personal profile] mabfan (my husband), [profile] lcmlc (my mother), [profile] beckyfeld (my sister), and [personal profile] osewalrus (my brother-in-law, married to [profile] beckyfeld)
-- There are folks on my friends list who I have known since elementary school or even before.
-- I am a word nerd and an inveterate punster. I wrangle words professionally, both as a technical writer and as a freelance editor.
-- I grew up functionally bilingual in an English-speaking household (a story unto itself). This means that I occasionally run into words in my vocabulary that don't have English equivalents, and this will spill over into my LJ. As a general policy, if I use a word/phrase/concept that needs more explanation, please tell me.
-- I'm an Orthodox Jew, and I have been known to yammer on about obscure Jewish topics here.
-- I knit (a lot), I sew (less than I used to, but still a decent amount), and I'm occasionally dabble in beading.
-- I have an inexplicable love of penguins.
-- I have a standing policy on icons in comments.
-- My life is one long musical cue. Anything and everything is a prompt for me to break out in song (or, as it manifests itself here periodically, in random lyrics), and I'm hugely susceptible to earworms.
-- I will break out into song at the smallest provocation.
-- I encourage discussion in comments, as long as everyone stays civil. Disagreement is good; ad hominem attacks will not be tolerated (and will be deleted).

Recurring Features in the [personal profile] gnomiverse:

-- "No, Really, We Talk Like This" (oddball conversations, usually between [personal profile] mabfan and me)
-- Language-related polls
-- Menu planning (usually for Shabbat (the Sabbath) or Jewish holidays)
-- Rambly Bits (catchall posts of stuff I've been thinking about that don't merit their own posts)

As a couple of people have pointed out, "Narf" is always an appropriate response to a question I ask.

So, pull up a seat, grab a drink or a snack, and enjoy yourself!

thanks for adding earworms to my vocabulary! And I always look forward to the Shabbat menus. Some years ago someone was posting some yummy challah recipes. Was it you?

A bit ago, I posted my mom's challah recipe (http://gnomi.livejournal.com/376020.html).

And "earworms" is a word I picked up from a friend, feeling that it works well for the situation.

do you remember who had the whole wheat challahs and the the ones with all different things added in? Will try your Mom's!

I don't, alas.

If I come across it again, I'll let you know.

Love of penguins is never inexplicable.

Did you know that if you call the New England Aquarium's main phone number, one of the options in the automated menu is "To hear a penguin, press 6"?

[personal profile] tsuki_no_bara, another penguin fan, clued me in to that one.

When you press 6, an approximately 30-second-long clip of the noise from the penguin enclosure plays. It then returns to the main menu.

Hee! I must call that number.

Oh, and NARF!

No questions were asked, however I feel the following coming on:

NARF!

Also, SPLORT!

Also, naked cat.

I think that covers everything.

Naked cat is naked. ::nods decisively::

Hi new friend - we're going to get along GREAT:)

All my icons are rated G. A few of them have cuss words in them which I use for emphasis when I am talking about craptastic government maneuvers - which can occur weekly depending on how busy they are.

Have a happy day and I love penguins too.

There is very little politics discussed here. I know that my political views periodically diverge mightily from most of my friends' (I'm centrist (socially liberal/fiscally conservative) in a truly liberal state), so I try not to get into it here.

Penguins, however, are always a welcome topic of discussion. :-)

Welcome to the madhouse!

To clarify- I am not one of those tedious types who ramble on and on about the government - rather I make fun of them with reckless abandon which I figure is my duty as a citizen ha!

From: [identity profile] gnomi.livejournal.com
I didn't figure you did ramble thus. I just figured I'd clarify myself.

And I wanted a reason to use my penguin politics icon. ;-)

No they're not! They're wearing their tuxedos!

I saw the penguin part of "Mary Poppins" on Sunday (ABC Family was showing it while I was channel surfing). You can't tell me they'd let the waitstaff go naked.

Hi new friend! *waves* I think I'm really going to like it here :)

I'm highly susceptible to earworms too - sadly, the earworms I get are never the ones that I want :S

And just because it's acceptable here : Narf! :)

Hi, and welcome!

For me, all it takes is someone mentioning one lyric -- not even singing it -- and the song is stuck in my head for *hours*.

Date: 2008-05-13 06:24 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 1-rhiannon-1.livejournal.com
Me too! And just the mention of a ... never mind. I really don't want that song in my head and you'll probably boot me from your journal if I get it stuck in yours *g*

Heh. Fear not; folks earworm me all the time. That is never cause for banishment. :-)

Hahaha, that was great! :-)

I'm looking forward to seeing you and mabfan soon! As we get closer to my visit, we will plan something.

Last night, [profile] madknits and I talked briefly about the four of us (you, [profile] madknits, [personal profile] mabfan, and I) having dinner together somewhere in Brookline. Since the friendly-to-kosher-and-friendly-to-vegetarian options are limited, I have a decent idea of where we might go. :-)

So once you know your travel dates, we'll see if we can find a night that's good for all of us.

I am pretty sure it will have to be one of these dates:

June 4th or 5th (Wednesday or Thursday).

Talk amongst yourselves and let me know! :)

From: [identity profile] gnomi.livejournal.com
It would have to be the 5th if [personal profile] mabfan is to come with us, as he has class on Wednesday night.

But if I recall correctly, [profile] madknits's free night is Thursday, as well. So that could work.

Yes, I am pretty sure he and I met up on a Thursday the last time I was in town for a conference (last November). So, let's tentatively plan on getting together on Thursday evening for dinner in Brookline! :-) I will e-mail you and Ken and see if that's OK.
