I found an error in this morning's offering from [livejournal.com profile] kradical's "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader" calendar. But the way I knew the error existed was kinda scary... So, a poll:

I'm still very "buh?" with what I assume are song lyrics everyone is quoting, but I did follow the link you posted -- and immediately went O.O and !!!! at your darling's reply to you. Perspective is a WILD thing, since I can only assume that we're taught our history from very different points of view. *giggles*

(Since, of COURSE those two colonies failed to take up arms against the King and while they didn't 'join Canada' they instead BECAME Canada. As they were good Loyalists.)

Some years ago I was playing trivia with friends and we got on the topic of trying to identify films from their last lines. This is a popular movie trivia category, and we went through the more famous ones ("There's no place like home," "It was beauty killed the beast," etc.) before trying to come up with more interesting ones. I offered "Georgia, Dr. Lymon Hall," figuring that while it was not an especially famous last line, it was inferable with the right insight. I was pleased that it was guessed correctly.

Quotes from that movie run as a thread through [personal profile] mabfan's and my conversations. One can often tell from folks' facial expressions whether or not they're familiar with the movie.

We have a tradition of watching it every 4th of July. When feasible, we go to hear the reading of the Declaration at the Old State House (feet from the site of the Boston Massacre) and then go home and watch "1776."

Yeah, that's an element of it. But not everyone gets American history in as much depth as I got lucky enough to get. Part of it was school, yes. But part of it was also that my parents are both history buffs and that there are plenty of local historical sites to visit within even a 5-mile radius of the house in which I grew up (I grew up in Burlington, MA, which borders on Lexington. Friends of mine were involved in the yearly reinactment of the Shot Heard Round the World on the Lexington Green (it's a Lexington tradition, held every Patriots Day)).

From "West Wing's" Pilot episode:

"Leo: [on the phone with the New York Times] 17 across. Yes, 17 across is wrong... You're spelling his name wrong... What's my name? My name doesn't matter. I am just an ordinary citizen who relies on the Times crossword for stimulation. And I'm telling you that I met the man twice. And I recommended a pre-emptive Exocet missile strike against his air force, so I think I know how...
C.J.: Leo.
Leo: They hang up on me every time.
C.J: That's almost hard to believe
"

Sigh.

Also, you should include general-lee in your poll.

William Daniels will ALWAYS be John Adams in my mind. Even if he was better looking than Adams *ever* was.
