-- Congratulations to the Boston Celtics on their winning the NBA championship (that's professional US basketball, for those who don't follow these things). It's been 22 years (I was in high school for the last one), and the team's been through a lot in that time.

-- The Celtics' win makes me think of two women from my past: my high school social studies teacher, Mrs. Kaufman, and Shirley, who was the office secretary for New England Young Judaea. Both were major Celtics fans, and both were following the last run to the championship very closely. I remember being at the Boston-area celebration of Israel's Independence Day on the Esplanade and Shirley sitting on the grass in a lawn chair, listening to a transistor radio because she may have had to be at the rally, but she was *not* going to miss the game.

-- Relatedly, who opened the Stupid box and let all the Stupid out? Didn't anyone learn *anything* from Pandora? I'm mostly afraid of what might be at the bottom of the Stupid box. I'm looking at you, rioting fans.

-- An official Jewish tartan has been announced (thanks, [profile] madknits, for the heads-up). My first thought for a clan? MacAbee.

-- I'm continuing the "decaffeinate [personal profile] gnomi" project (ongoing for about 5 years, this is one of the last steps). I've now started drinking decaf coffee more often, but I feel odd just making a pot of decaf when come into the office in the morning. So now I make *two* pots -- one decaf, very clearly marked as such, and one regular. Because the last thing a caffeine-deprived codemonkey wants is stealth decaf.

Not sure I understand the point of a Jewish tartan - is it to be worn instead of the clan tartan, or in addition to?

Since Scottish clan membership is passed down on the male line, with my Jewish father and Scottish-and-some-other-stuff mother I'm neither Scottish nor Jewish "by blood". I have a co-worker who is in the opposite circumstance and is both Scottish and Jewish (in addition to being a practicing Jew, unlike me). So should I wear this tartan, or should he?

rich the coworker just commented that the tartan's stripes should be at an angle so you get stars of david. heh. the tartan is a cool idea, tho.

The group of Jews who camped together at Pennsic the year after we were there went by Clan McIvree.

But they don't seem to sell a Jewish tartan tallis.

Will we be seeing pictures of [livejournal.com profile] mabfan in a kilt?

Not anytime soon. :-)

I might, however, get a shirt in the design. I like wearing plaid shirts.

Maybe do it Seattle-style? A Utilikilt? One of the great joys of Seattle in summertime is all the men in Utilikilts. Yes. Really. You should bring the joy to Boston.

Hmm. My recollection is that kilts are traditionally formal attire.

Ah, this has little to do with tradition and much to do with practicality. And, ya know, fun.

Hehe :) This reminded me of the story about one of the ladies in this office (before my time here) switching the coffee to decaf and no one saying anything about it. Then she left to go to another office and her replacement didn't know that the whole office had been drinking mostly decaf for over a month so she just made regular coffee. O_O Professors bouncing off the walls!

Ah, so you're the source of the well-labeled decaf! Not that I'm drinking it, because I've given up on the office coffee and have a coffee maker in my cube, but thank you for labeling it.

I like caffeine. I've cut down and use my own tasty coffee now so I can control it. The coffee roulette in the kitchen pots got to my stomach. (for those playing along at home, all the coffee pots have meaningless labels and the contents would be either decaf, single strength black coffee, 1.5x black coffee, double strength black coffee, or accidental turkish coffee.)

bless you for clearly marking your decaf. i have been the victim of stealth decaf and it is NOT pretty. i am not, technically speaking, a codemonkey, but i am an engineer and a sometimes teacher and i am just as bad when decaffeinated as your standard issue codemonkey. so... bless you.

Funny, I don't remember Mrs. K. being a sports fan... I remember her being a Beverly Sills and Mikhail Baryshnikov fan. :-) I guess she must have focused on different interests, depending on the student.

Before the MacAbee clan moved to Scotland, the family name was "Ben Avraham".

Similarly, when Ovadia Ben Yochanan went to become a Jedi, he had to change his name. The first two parts of the name were truncated to initials, and Yochanan was changed to its Spanish equivalent. So he was henceforth known as O. B. Juan.
