So, the radio station I listen to has started running a bunch of PSAs during their commerical breaks (for groups such as such as Americans for the Arts and McGruff the Crime Dog). One of the ones they've been running regularly is for Ready.gov, and the ad consists of a couple discussing how to prepare for a disaster. And every time they say "In case of fire, flood, or cyber attack," I hear "in case of fire, flood, or Cybermen."

Okay. I can see how, and why, to prepare for fire and flood. But, I've got to admit -- in case of cyber attack, yeah, I'm going to get annoyed at not being able to look at IMDB, but it's not really CRITICAL.

I'm sure that many people think about it that way, however, you should consider what you should do if one day not only "the internet" wasn't working but your cable television provider had gone down and neither mobile nor landline (nor, of course, VoIP) telephones were working. Today, not only is "the internet" critical infrastructure for a lot of businesses, but many of the things that we think of as "not depending on the internet" increasingly do. By law and by design, calling 911 from a landline "should" be unaffected, but that's a somewhat cold comfort when a lot of people no longer even have landlines. In the event of an all-out "cyber-attack" by a motivated adversary, I would expect the only viable source of breaking news to be broadcast (not cable) TV or radio - if those are able to effectively stay up... and for emergency communication we might have to rely on entirely decentralized modes such as amateur radio.

No cell phone, no cable, no business contacts that can't wait a week or two if necessary under emergency situations.
