[livejournal.com profile] mabfan and I disagree on how to spell one of Muffin's nicknames. And so I poll:

photograph the girls in each of those options. Also, Narf!

The nicknames: I'd go for the -i ending. Sh vs. Ch -- depends how you pronounce it.

Agreed. I like the "i" better.

How do you pronounce the nickname? And if it might be relevant, what is its origin? (You're not naming her after a car, right?)

We pronounce it like the car, but it's a diminutive and clipping of her first name.

Well, my dog is named Chevy. His nickname. Everyone thinks it's after the car, but NOOO. Sheesh, ppl. His full name is Chevenga. So, obviously, I'm biased. <.<;;;

I like Chevi and Shevi, which sound like che-VI and SHAY-vi respectively, in my head.

Also, SNOWSUITS. First snowsuit pictures == win.

The purist in me says SH, of course.

I was thinking Shevie for no real good reason, but then I concluded that, much as I am generally an advocate of separating identities to the greatest extent possible, parity of ending Muffin's diminutive in the same spelling as that of Squeaker's is the way to go on this one.

"Sh" because that's the letter combination in her name.

"i" for two reasons: first because I prefer that as a nickname ending; and second because "Shevy's" is a big wig store (not a bigwig store) in Brooklyn.

I still have difficulty getting my head around the concept of someone with that name having a nickname, as my sister (who has the same name) has never liked being called by one. Also, the nickname sounds both like the car, and like the word for "captivity" in Lamentations 1:18.

But hey, if you're going to go with something that sounds so familiar to people, you may as well spell it the same way, so I went for Chevy.

The problem with Chevy is that it looks like the usual diminutive for Yocheved, so many people will want to pronounce it with a ch (as in loch) sound instead of a sh.

How about Shevie?

All I can say is thank goodness I told P right. He wanted to know which one was Muffin and which was Squeaker :).
