It's called turning off the ringer. My father figured that out in 1970 back when turning off the ringer meant disabling the mechanical bell in a phone.
That's a much more dicey prospect when one is job searching and one might get a job-offering-related call. But, yes, we've definitely thought about it.
My father did this right after my older brother was born. A few days later, my father left for work after disabling the ringer because my mother and brother were sleeping. My maternal grandfather called and, getting on answer, panicked and raced over to the house. His banging on the door woke both mother and baby. Neither were amused.
