I haven't had a free moment to update this since we got back from New York. Things that have kept me away have been varied, both good and bad, but all keeping me quite busy. So here's a rundown of the recent goings-on:

-- Got back from NYC on Thursday, spent Friday of last week doing those random errands that need to happen: we picked up the week's mail at the post office, I picked up my new glasses (yay! sight! what a concept!), drove out to the Dedham courthouse so that MAB would know where to go for his jury duty, went to the New England Mobile Book Fair (magnificent, wonderful warehouse-o-books), and other random things I can't remember at the moment. I also managed to send comments to [livejournal.com profile] gem225 on the story she'd asked me to look at, which was a Good Thing. Friday afternoon at around 4:30, the phone rings. It's my uber-boss, calling to tell me that there was a massive round of layoffs while I was gone, and that while I personally was safe, many good friends had gotten the axe and were no longer at the company (the layoffs were announced Wednesday; the affected folks' last day was Thursday). I appreciated greatly the fact that she called, as that way I had time to assimilate the information before going into work on Monday and finding lots of people missing.

-- On Sunday, I got together with a group of friends and spent the day sewing (we do this about once a month). I managed to finish one project I'd been working on and cut out the pattern pieces for two more (a skirt and a blouse, not necessarily going to match, but I want to make them next). It was quite a fun day (sewing circle Sundays are always a blast), and productive, too.

--Monday at work was surreal. The office is very quiet, very empty with all the laid-off people gone. I also found out that my department is moving within the building (we're consolidating space), so I'll be moving to my 4th desk in 2.5 years. So now, besides the 6 books I'm responsible for having ready by 30 September, I've got to factor in time lost to packing and moving. I also got a phone call at work from a friend who's going through a rough time and I spent about half an hour talking to her, trying to make her feel better. I hope I succeeded, but I'm honestly not sure I did. By the time I got home on Monday, I was exhausted and drained. And then we went grocery shopping, so that I could buy what I need to make meals for my parents for this weekend (Friday is their anniversary; I figured making their shabbat meals was a reasonable gift, and they agreed).

--Tuesday was also busy at work. My books are back from technical review, and now I'm implementing all the changes that the developers and others suggested. Most were good and helpful; some were pointless ("you've got a typo on page 200" just isn't a helpful technical review comment). Then, Tuesday night, I went to get fitted for new contact lenses. Yay - even more sight! So now all I need is to go and get a pair of reading glasses to wear with my contacts to compensate for my left-eye strabismus (I've worn progressive bifocals since I was 17) and all will be perfect in terms of eye issues. When I couldn't fall asleep last night (I'm blaming the air quality and my sinuses), I spent the time mentally organizing my cube and the other office stuff for which I'm responsible and figuring out how to pack it all and where it should go after the move. Yeah, I'm a bit detail-oriented at times. What makes you ask?

-- Today's crazy-busy, but the craziness is becoming routine by now. I think that scares me on some level. And tonight I cook for shabbat. I hope it gets a bit cooler tonight, as I'm going to have the oven on at 300/350 degrees for 3 hours (my brisket recipe is easy but cooking-time intensive), but I'm not counting on it

Good luck with everything. I'm sorry to hear it's so empty at work and so hot in your apartment, but everything else sounds nice. [livejournal.com profile] arib did pass on your greetings, by the way, I've just been too lame to e-mail you.

B'Shalom,
gingi

Your comments were very helpful, and thank you again for them. :-)
