What was your first impression of me when we met? (Adopting a very broad definition of "met" in some cases.)

i wasn't expecting you to be wearing a hat. (seriously!)

Oddly, half the time I forget I'm wearing it in public. I started covering my hair around 1996-1997, and it's just kind of part of going out in public, like putting on my shoes.

I thought you were older and more mature than you actually are.
I err in that direction with everyone at a new job, and within a day or two everyone corrected my impressions.

I can understand that...I tend to assume that everyone I meet is older than me unless it's clearly not true.

This is amusing, since I just looked, and I am older than you are, but younger than [livejournal.com profile] mabfan. (And, given the birthdates, obviously within a year of both of you.)

Actually, we have a surprising number of friends whose dates of birth fall within that 11-month span between MAB's DOB and mine. It amuses me on some level.

I think our first non-meeting meeting was at the LMB reading at MIT in 1999, and our first actual meeting was after the Boskone "20 panels" panel this year.

So, first impression: Orthodox. (Yeah, the hair coverage thing. What can I say, except that I'm sure I'm at an above-average level of knowledge for a gentile.)

I'm not sure that I was at the LMB reading in 1999, though I attended most of the ones MAB was co-hosting. But, yeah - if you attended any of the Media in Transition lectures that MAB was co-hosting, we were probably in the same room at the same time (and I was introduced to a bunch of folks at the lectures; sadly, I do not remember all of them). And I do remember meeting you at the 20 Panels, for all that Boskone intros become something of a blur about a day after the con.

As for first impression being "Orthodox," yeah, that's not uncommon. Something about the covering the hair and the long skirts. And I am impressed that the hat gave an impression other than "yeah, that chick wears odd hats." Of course, most people have never seen my jester hat (the one that MAB adorned [profile] kradical with at the N4 incarnation of "20 Panels").

I thought you were very friendly and except for being at a scifi con and being the spouse of a science fiction writer you seemed normal. I did not learn about your porn obsession until it was far too late. ;)

Heh. As you now know, "normal" is not a standard adjective used to describe me. But I think that's better, honestly.

And my interest in porn is purely academic.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I thought you were a friendly woman who worried about her husband in an exceedingly cute way.

Good to have met you!

It was wonderful to meet you and to get an opportunity to introduce you to some folks, as well. And I'm always afraid at cons that I'll come off as frazzled and rushed - we're so commonly dashing from place to place that I'm never sure that I'm staying still long enough to make any impression other than "who was that crazy chick?"

I think you were "Harold's wife's sister," who had lots of interesting topics of conversation. If I'm remembering at all correctly...

Yeah, that sounds about right. For the longest time you were "Debby, Harold's chavrusah" in my brain. It took me a long time to figure out how many ways my social circle was connected to yours.

Meeting At Arisia in you mom's room. Great person. Where does she get the energy. (fatigue was the result of all night partying.)
The secon meeting was more lucid. :)

Hee! I've met a number of less-than-lucid folks at conventions (and have been less-than-lucid myself in similar situations). And at cons I have no clue where my energy comes from, but I crash big-time right after. Sleep goooood!

:-) I remember similar impressions of you when we first met. Something about meeting through mutual friends at conventions leads to such impressions, I believe.

I don't know that I had an impression, per se. You have to remember the circumstances under which we met, though, for that to make sense.

I was so relieved that we were both in the right place and then I was totally overwhelmed by the sheer force of MAB's presence that I don't think I had a coherent thought until we were 3/4s of the way to My Favorite Dessert Company.

And we got lost! With a New Yorker for heaven's sake!

Honestly, I think my first impression was that you were as frazzled and as frantic as I was. How's that?

Frazzled and frantic makes sense, given that we'd taken a train that got us in at 3 AM. :-)

And yeah - relief that we'd actually managed to find each other on that bizarre 8th-floor lobby.

Of course, I'd "met" you online so long before, I was comfortable being FrazzledGirl in your presence. And, yes, that's a compliment to you, ma'am.

That you were definitely someone I'd want to work for.
And I got what I wanted :-D

I'm so glad that it was such a positive experience for both of us. I was always somewhat stressed while interviewing people (will they be competent; will they actually want the job once they hear what it entails; will I ask coherent questions and get back coherent answers) that most of the interviews I did there are total blurs. But I remember being extremely impressed by you. And so I hired you. :-)

(the other bizarre connection, which we didn't know at the time, was just an added bonus)
