I graduated from BU in May 1994. As of this month, my college education is completely paid for. I should be getting the promisory notes for my Stafford and Perkins loans (of which there were multiple over the years of my education) in the next couple of months.

It's bizarre to think I've been out of college for 10 years; it's further bizarre to think that I've finally finished dealing with the loans. I still remember back at the beginning of my freshman year in college having a pre-loan interview in which they emphasized the fact that failure to pay my loans back could have serious impact on future loans, including mortgages and car loans. Which, to a 19-year-old, seemed like things that were a lifetime away.

Congratulations on finishing the loans!

(I still can't believe how long I've been out of college either... and it's definitely more than 10 years.)

Congrats! That is indeed an accomplishment.

Ya know, when my buddy Joel finished paying off his loans, he took us all out for beer. So, whaddya say? I bet you have friends who could use a beer....

As for taking people out for beer, it's an interesting idea. Though very few of my friends, it turns out, are beer drinkers.

Congratulations! There's nothing quite like receiving those promisory notes in the mail and realizing that you've been given a piece of your life back that you didn't realize you'd given away. Mazel tov!

Thanks! They tell me it'll be about 3 months before I see the promisory notes, but just knowing I'm owed them feels good. And, yeah - it's going to be nice not to have that money earmarked monthly for loan stuff.

Go you! As a highly debt-averse person, I can understand the feeling of relief in finally closing out something that's been there that long, and having the extra cash flow is also a lovely thing.

Thanks! And, indeed, there's this feeling of relief, this feeling that I no longer have to remember to pay it, pay it on time, put money aside for it, whatever. And no more silly coupon books (one of my loans sent me a yearly coupon book instead of monthly statements).

Oh, congratulations! (And mad envy, as I went into debt for life when I decided to go back for my Masters.)

It's weird when you realize these milestones. Just a bizarre feeling.

Thanks! It was one of those things that originally seemed so far off, so it's sort of surprising that it's finally happened.

I think our last student loan payment is scheduled for 2022. G will be a junior (or maybe senior) in college (unless our brainwashing succeeds). Seth's dad was still paying for med school when Seth was in college. Hopefully G and S will grow up to be plumbers. :->

And let me add now a special "thank you" to Joseph Hiatt and Barry Goldwater, funders of my entire (ok, 90%) undergraduate education, and the US taxpayers, funders of my entire graduate education.

Mazel tov! And, good timing... I'm sure that extra bit of flux will be nice while M. is working on his book.
