(Hey, look! My first poll posted in actual poll format!)

I am considering using the phrase "passkey reader" in a story. But I'm not sure if it means anything to anyone who isn't me. Therefore, a poll:

I recognize it, but I would more readily use card reader for both.
If I had to distinguish the two, I would say "magstripe card reader" and "proxcard reader".

I agree. I don't generally think of them as "passkey readers", but simply "key readers". That would apply to both types of readers, too.

Since I don't recognize the term, I didn't answer the second question. I'd just have been guessing.

I didn't recognize it, but if I had to infer a definition it would be a card reader -- not a credit-card reader at a store but one of the systems designed for building security, where you swipe a card to get in.

I usually call it a "card reader", though.

While I didn't recognize the term, after seeing your choices it sounded like the kind of system you swipe a card through to get into a locked door or gate.

Google comes up with a couple of hits for "passkey reader". Some of the results imply an atm card style device, others a numeric keypad type of device. All of those hits appear to involve real people or fictional characters attempting to bypass said devices. :)

"This has been another 'Useless Fact'".
