Do you make your own gefilte fish? I've just recently developed a taste for the stuff (it's only edible with really freshly grated horseradish).
There's this parasite called Plotz's Tapeworm, and the reason it's named for my great-grandfather is that he discovered how people got infected with it. He had his practice in Brooklyn, and he noticed that the tapeworm in question seemed to primarily afflict middle-aged Jewish women. One Friday he was in his mother's kitchen as she prepared their Shabbos dinner, and he asked, "How do you know the gefilte fish has enough seasoning?" She replied, "I taste it," and my great-grandfather went, "AHA!"
I used to love putting zuchinni into stir fry - it had an unexpected nutty taste, at least to me.
While I think gefilte fish is always a good first course I have to admit that the loaf is too sweet for me and I never liked the jar. I liked my grandmothers - with lots of horseradish ;).
By the way - I know it's shockingly late for this but I wanted to thank the two of you for the Birthday card!!! It was nice to get it in the mail :).
I also think of baby corn, and water chestnuts (fresh, if possible; totally different than the canned ones). Also, different kinds of mushrooms. Sometimes eggplant. Peppers, but not green ones. Bok choi, or another kind of choi, if bok isn't available. Napa cabbage.
I agree with the previous comment of baby corn and water chestnuts. Also, garlic is not necessary if you use a lot of ginger. Different type of stir fry. I'm not a mushroom kind of guy, so that's a personal thing.
At Shaw's you can get a 3-pack of bell peppers of assorted colors. This is best for a stir fry. Try to be as colorful as possible. Green and brown is boring.
Baby corn and water chestnuts and soy sauce or tamari (tamari is really good and you can get it with reduced sodium, which is good in my household because of The High Blood Pressure Thing Which Is Not My Problem Nor The Cats Nor The Bird. Um. You can tell I'm flying high and happy, yes? I thought so).
Life is wonderful. Wonderful, I say! Also, "The Muppet Show" Season 1 is utterly hilarious, and I hope that you get your DVDs soon because you and mabfan will love them. Oh, yes. :-D
