In response to this article (it's from the NYT, so it requires registration. Check bugmenot for a login and password), I made this icon.

I believe it's "gratuitous icon post."

Gratuitous Icon Post. Basically, a post the sole excuse of which is to show off an icon.

Oh. In looking back, I note that I made one of those and [livejournal.com profile] colorwheel actually told me so. I should've asked her then what it meant. :)

I am beginning to wonder if the religious right has the same kind of brain I do. Their way of viewing just about any given set of facts, of viewing just about anything, is so aline to my own that I wonder...

Of course, if the producers of the film made more of an effort to spell out their own politics, this woulnd't be happening. (Though neither would its popularity.)

Huh?

Okay, I can understand the religious right using this to support Intelligent Design. One of the things that has always amazed me about those of strong faith is that they can use absolutely anything to support a preexisting faith rather than use observations to come to a new understanding. That's the fundamental difference between faith and science and why gemara is somewhat consistent with scientific thought. However, the specialization can be used as a further proof of evolution over creation as it would have taken millions of years for such specialization to develop.

The thing that really gets me is the religious right using this to support their concept of monogomy. That's really interesting as penguins find a new mate EVERY YEAR! This is a cross between serial dating and marriage. Also, penguins only copulate (or however they do it) once per year. This isn't really the model for relationships that I would use. However, the dedication of the father to family life is fantastic.

This is just a hunch, but I'm guessing none of the bozos saying that this is proof of intelligent design and the importance of conservative "values" and so forth have never heard of Roy and Silo.

Fascinating, in a twisted sort of way... and, cute icon!

I can understand the family-values aspect, even if penguins practice serial monogamy. But citing the penguins' life cycle as evidence of "intelligent design" suggests they believe in a very nasty Designer. The movie shows the penguins traveling for miles to their nesting grounds, then enduring bitter cold while starving for months. The thought that Someone intentionally designed penguins to live that way is gruesome.

Oh, and I get a GIP of my own with this comment. :)
