While watching lots and lots of Stargate: SG-1 with [livejournal.com profile] mabfan, I began to think that what this world really needed was a comprehensive list of acronyms used in Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis. And after poking around some on the Internet, I have determined that a one-stop shop for Stargate-related acronyms does not appear to exist. And then I got the completely wacky idea that I should be the one to compile such a list. But then I wondered, is this idea good-wacky or bad-wacky? And so, a poll:

I assume you mean compiling a list of the acronyms already used, yes? Because there are a number that I know of: SGA, SG1, J/D ... depending on what you want acronyms for. ;)

Yeah, I'm thinking of the specific acronyms used in the shows themselves. They're military, so they run on acronyms.

Those aren't acronyms. An acronym is a word which is also an abbreviation.

Well, yeah, but it's still a cool idea... (And I say this never having seen the show.)

I'm stunned that there isn't such a list on GateWorld.net......

I didn't see one immediately. I didn't search exhaustively, however, so there might be one there.

That is, I did a search using the site's search function, and no such list was returned as existing on the site.

But, see, this kind of project only appeals to the science-fiction-fan-slash-lexicographer type, and I'm not sure there are that many of us out there.

My "other" was that you should either have it posted on or linked from some of the major Stargate fan websites. I don't know what any of them are, but [livejournal.com profile] xochiquetzl will.

Mm, yeah. Good idea. Thanks! GateWorld.net would be one, I'd think.

I like that you ask "sufficiently wacky that I shouldn't undertake it," yet the next question proceeds as though the undertaking were fait accompli.

For "Once it's done, I should..." I chose "other," and here is my "other": Bury it deep in a corner of your backyard and never speak of it again.

Well, I was seeing it this way:

Wacky? Yes -- Go to next question; No -- Go to next question.

Too wacky? Yes -- Skip to question 4; No -- Go to next question.

Where should I post? -- choose, then go to question 4.

(yeah, I'm a big honkin' geek. But you knew that.)

Write a chapbook and sell it...

The US military has entire volumes of books of acronyms.

Acronyms have been around since at least the dawn of history, consider Tanakh, for example, it is an acronym...

I'm quite fond of acronyms, myself. But I'm in software, and we run on acronyms and jargon, much like the military.

If this takes away from writing time, I'm not for it.

Just saying :)

Heh. Fear not. The brainfolk won't let me ignore them for a lexicography project.

Yes, well, we're hoping these aren't the only brainfolk we ever get.

True.

Speaking of whom, CJ's about to respond to his e-mail and such. Your brainfolk should be getting stuff before I go to bed.

"Once I'm done, I should..."

...double check the list to make sure you've included all acronyms relevant to SGA slash fiction. 'Cause there are people on my flist who shall be checking. ;)

Hmm. I wasn't thinking about expanding it beyond the ones used in SG-1 and SGA canon. But maybe some day I'll do a compendium of SG-1 and SGA fandom terms (along the lines of Ruth Gifford's Ruth's ASCEM Glossary (http://trekiverse.us/FAQs/RuthsASCEMGlossary.html)).
