The set up: mabfan and gnomi have heated a glass bowl of edamame in the microwave.

mabfan: Wow, that's really hot. How're we going to get it out?

gnomi: Teflon fingers!

gnomi removes the bowl from the microwave with her bare hands.

mabfan: Don't you know the first law of Chemistry Lab?

gnomi: You do not talk about Chemistry Lab?


Yeah, yeah, I know -- it's "Hot glass looks the same as cold glass."

Oddly enough, I can take hot things out of the microwave/off the hotplate without pot holders (though not out of the oven, usually), but carrying a cup of hot coffee from the Starbucks down the street to my office requires a double cup and sometimes one of those cardboard sleeves, as well.

It's probably duration -- I'm only holding the hot bowl/pan/whatever for a minute or so, whereas it's a 5-minute walk from the Starbucks to my office, giving the heat time to actually register for me.
