So, OK. I? Will never qualify as a girly-girl. I was a serious tomboy as a kid, and I still am. And I'm fine with this, honest and true. However, occasionally my lack of girly-girl-ness ends up being a problem. And thus I appeal to you all, who may have suggestions.

Here's the deal. I have Very Long Hair, which I cover, usually in a hat or a beret or somesuch. But I have hats for shul (synagogue) that I bought before my hair was nearly this long, and while my hair is compressable, it is now at the point that I cannot smush it all up under my shul hats. So, about 6 years or so ago, I bought a couple of barrettes with snoods attached, and the hair that won't fit into the hat gets put in the snood. No problem. But -- problem! It's now six years later, and the barrettes and snoods are definitely showing their age. So I sought to replace them... and struck out.

Now I appeal to you. Do any of you know of a source of barrettes-with-snoods (either a store in the Boston area or an online source)? Or a link to a pattern (sewing or knitting) that I could use to make snoods-on-barrettes?

Thanks so much in advance!

I found these two snood patterns through some googling. It might take a little experimentation to make them just the right size. Making barettes is easy, I can show you.

Here's an Etsy page selling some: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=13994

You might try searching for "bun cover" or "bun snood" as well. There's a bunch on ebay, too. Apparently they're big with equestriennes and ballerinas.

I grabbed the Lion Brand one yesterday, but thanks for the link to the second one. I think I'll have to play with the second one.

And yeah, I'd love you to show me how to make a barette out of it. Thanks!

Can you crochet? I have crocheted snoods before -- I sewed the end to a headband on two, barettes on the other two, and they worked like a dream. I love snoods, beyond all reason.

A snood can be made from basically any open work doily pattern -- I used a snowflake one, which I will search for as soon as I'm not smut mongering -- but I've no idea how to translate that into knitting.

Thanks! I'll have to figure out how to resize it to bun-size, but it'll be a place to start.

I haven't crocheted in close to 25 years, alas.

But I can do lacework knitting, so that might be an avenue to pursue. Thanks for the idea!

You may be able to find what you need in equestrian catalogs, especially English or Dressage gear. Google "equestrian show bow".

(I was reading friendsfriends and came across your entry.)

I've seen snoods attached to headbands, but unfortunately don't know much about their construction as I don't have the length of hair for a snood. However, I would like to just say "snood" for a while because it's fun to say. Snood!

Around here, the beauty supply shops often sell snoods. I picked up a few back when I was doing Victorian dance. They're really easy to attach to existing barrettes.

Well, it's nothing you couldn't do yourself, but here's some stuff I found:

http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=snood+barrette&btnG=Search

http://www.melaniemoore.com/snoods/snoods.htm

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=snood+barrette&btnG=Search

That last link is very general but I just didn't have time to check out more than that melanie moore site (which looks like a nice item. Enjoy the hunt and hope this helps!!

Following this post with interest. I love snoods and may end up making my own, since I'm not finding them as often as I used to.

Huh. "snood" is a real word. She's not just making it up in some sort of surrealist attempt to mess with my head.

Well, damn your eyes, you've messed with my head anyway. I hope you're happy.

[livejournal.com profile] guendalina of Lady Guendalina's Closet sells at Arisia, and she's fairly local to Boston-metro.
