-- Today we have snow. Again. Numbers I'm seeing right now indicate that we got somewhere around another 9 or so inches. Which is not such a large snowfall for our area, in general. Problem is, there's nowhere to *put* the snow when you clear it off roads/sidewalks/stairs/driveways due to the lingering snow from the last storm (and the storm before that... the storm before *that* melted when we had a couple of days in the low 40s).

-- We continued the flow of objects in the Great Clothing (and Stuff) Continuum by passing along a baby swing that has been, for Muffin and Squeaker, just an oddity in the living room/play room for about eight months. I have mixed feelings when we do this -- I feel good, knowing that I am letting another family get the enjoyment of the use of the item, but at the same time I feel nostalgic about when our girls used it.

-- Last night, thanks to the kindness of a friend willing to babysit, [livejournal.com profile] mabfan and I met Mike Brown, the discoverer of Eris (and killer of Pluto). [livejournal.com profile] mabfan has a write-up of our evening.

-- Earlier this week, when the low temperature in Boston was -2F, I knit myself a hat, because I decided it was silly that I had made warm hats for a number of people but did not have a good warm hat for myself. Now I am knitting another octopus, this one for the almost-six-month-old upstairs.

-- Still questing for good winter boots to replace my eight-year-old ones (the zippers have been through too much salt and sand and don't reliably zip any more). My requirements are relatively simple: waterproof, warm, not too expensive. I bought a pair that I was assured were waterproof, and they leaked like a sieve the first time I wore them in last week's wet-mush storm ("wet mush" in this case, was a combination of rain and show and slush that made crazy puddles all over Brookline).

-- I woke up this morning at about 3:20 to discover I was wearing my glasses. The bizarre thing about this is that I have a distinct memory of putting my glasses away and rolling onto my side to fall asleep, and that on-my-side position is not comfortable when I am still wearing my glasses. So sometime between when I fell asleep and 3:20, I must have woken up, opened my glasses case, put on my glasses, and gone back to sleep.

-- You can now go on a moose safari in Maine.

-- [personal profile] mabfan and I went and saw "A Jihad for Love" and then attended the Q&A thereafter with the producer and director. I enjoyed the film, but I'm still processing my thoughts about it.

-- Random "I hadn't made the connection before" moment from yesterday: The
actor who played the "real" Captain Jack Harkness in "Captain Jack Harkness" (Torchwood series 1 episode 12) is the same guy who gets a plug at the end of every Reduced Shakespeare Company podcast.

-- New TV shows with which I have become enamored: "The Middleman" and "In Plain Sight."

-- Returning shows the premiers of which I am anxiously anticipating: "Psych," "Eureka," "Stargate: Atlantis," "Burn Notice."

-- Now that it's summer, and with a vengeance, I've been looking for cooler and cooler (temperature-wise) ways to cover my hair. I've settled, for now, on tichels (head scarves), digging out the collection of scarves I picked up in Israel almost 20 years ago. But now I want to get more scarves. Because I like variety. :-) And [personal profile] mabfan and I have this desire to wear matching tie (his) and scarf (mine) to shul. So I'm now looking for, among other things, a scarf with Superman shields on it.

-- For those for whom this is relevant, tomorrow and Friday are Rosh Chodesh Tammuz.

-- I cannot turn off the editing part of my brain. This was brought into stark relief on Shabbat when the rabbi said that the pit into which Korach's followers fell was created "on the first Friday of creation." I leaned over and said to my friend (whose sister-in-law, to whom I had not yet been introduced, was sitting between us), "Hang on… the first Friday of creation? Wasn't there only one?" Immediately, the s-i-l knew that either (a) I am a language pedant, (b) I'm a bit nuts, or both.

-- One of [personal profile] gnomi's life rules: I should not see my coworkers' hipbones. Never-never.
-- I'm struck by the fact that I have a number of friends who (a) don't have a television, or (b) don't have a cell phone, or (c) have neither.
-- I am guilty of having broken out into song in other folks' LJs. I apologize in advance if I break out into song in yours unexpectedly.
-- It's in the 50s today; it's supposed to be in the 90s over the weekend. I don't think I have anything to wear for the 50s -- I've never owned a poodle skirt. The 90s are easier -- I still have a number of articles of clothing that I bought while in college.
-- Among the things I'm considering for Shavuot food: cheese blintz casserole thingy, Bill's Swiss veggie medley, lasagna, chocolate cheese pie. I have no clue if those go together. If it's going to be hot, starting with soup is probably a bad idea. Unless I do fruit soup or other cold soup. Will continue to ponder.
-- It's really hard to make an appointment somewhere when, each time one calls, the phone either rings and rings and rings without picking up or the line is busy.
-- Yesterday seemed to be "run into everyone in Coolidge Corner" evening. This happens periodically; I wish there would be a schedule published.
-- Cole Porter has invaded my brain.
-- People reading audiobooks should not do funny voices. It just makes me giggle, and then I lose the plot.
-- How late is too late to invite someone for a Yom Tov meal? Or a Shabbat meal? The latest [personal profile] mabfan and I ever invited anyone, that I can think of (when it wasn't just an in-shul, "Hey, do you have lunch plans? Wanna come home with us?") was when we called [personal profile] arib about 20 minutes before candle lighting one erev Y"T and invited him to second-day lunch.
-- I've been watching "Doctor Who" episodes with the commentary tracks. I love it when the writers crack themselves up at their own lines.

So, I realize this poll will only appeal to (and, perhaps, only make sense to) a very small number of people reading here. However, I was wondering, and, therefore, I poll.

(and when I say "snoods," I mean ones like these.)

[Poll #1094533]

-- The weather (evenings in the high 60s, days in the 80s) meant that my usual Yom Kippur outfit -- navy blue suit, yellow or turquoise Chucks -- was a no-go. So I wore short-sleeved dresses both last night and today and brought a sweater to counteract the air conditioning.

-- Because of the heat outside, the AC was on even higher than usual for Yom Kippur. Most of the women were wearing sweaters or shawls, as they have to be in the same room as the men, the majority of whom are wearing many warm layers: wool suit, kittel, wool tallit.

-- Because we don't wear leather shoes on Yom Kippur, this is the one day a year that a significant number of men are wearing suits and sneakers (some were wearing non-leather sandals in the minyan I was in)

-- On the women's side, I saw some canvas sneakers, as always, but there was significant representation by Crocs and non-leather sandals, again most likely because of the warm weather (I was wearing my less-than-fancy-but-not-leather sandals from North Face. Comfy to walk to shul and comfy to stand for all of Neila).

Here's the scenario: you go into a store and pick an item off a rack. The rack has a large sign that says "Sale: $29.99." In small print, the sign says "For items orignally marked $50." None of the items on the rack have an original price of $50. In fact, all of them are original price $80, and at the register they come up at a price of $49.99.

So... should you be paying $29.99 or $49.99?

...any of you going to the Maimo hat sale on Sunday (9 September) from 11-1?

-- Fresh blueberries in my breakfast cereal? Magnificent.

-- Last night, I was cooking simultaneously for a shiva and a sheva berachot. There was something of a surreal quality to it all. But we brought the pasta to the shiva house still warm, and she ate it right there and then, so I was pleased to have been able to provide. And the sheva berachot is tonight.

-- Related to the above: "The sheva berachot is tonight" or "The sheva berachot are tonight"? Discuss.

-- I'm working on the fourth of six froggy feet (link to PDF pattern) that I'm knitting. I'm up to the froggie toes, so I have about 8 rounds left, and then I bind off and start the next froggie foot. After that, froggy heads (link to PDF pattern).

-- On Monday, I braved the mall and bought two new dresses for shul for the summer. I've been getting bored with the three different (blue) summer dresses I have, so I took advantage of it being past the midpoint of the summer and hit a dress sale. So, yay. And I think [profile] beckyfeld would approve of my purchases. She, in her role as fashion insultant, has trained me well.

A friend of [profile] lcmlc has a wedding to go to and needs a dress that is tzniusdik (conforming to Jewish modesty standards) as well as fancy. What do I know? I make my own for stuff like that. So I turn to y'all... where (in the Boston area or national chains) would you suggest she shop?

Thanks!
gnomi: (Default)
So, OK. I? Will never qualify as a girly-girl. I was a serious tomboy as a kid, and I still am. And I'm fine with this, honest and true. However, occasionally my lack of girly-girl-ness ends up being a problem. And thus I appeal to you all, who may have suggestions.

Here's the deal. I have Very Long Hair, which I cover, usually in a hat or a beret or somesuch. But I have hats for shul (synagogue) that I bought before my hair was nearly this long, and while my hair is compressable, it is now at the point that I cannot smush it all up under my shul hats. So, about 6 years or so ago, I bought a couple of barrettes with snoods attached, and the hair that won't fit into the hat gets put in the snood. No problem. But -- problem! It's now six years later, and the barrettes and snoods are definitely showing their age. So I sought to replace them... and struck out.

Now I appeal to you. Do any of you know of a source of barrettes-with-snoods (either a store in the Boston area or an online source)? Or a link to a pattern (sewing or knitting) that I could use to make snoods-on-barrettes?

Thanks so much in advance!
