Since it's January, it's "Seeing Doctors Time" here in [livejournal.com profile] gnomiville. And due to various and sundry things from my appointment yesterday, I have a poll:

[Poll #904142]

(My mother raised us with the belief that one should dress nicely for doctors appointments (or, at least, not shlubbily) even though 99% of the time they're only going to see you in the johnny. I guessed how she'd vote in the poll, and when I asked her, she confirmed my guess as correct.)

i'd take my socks off unless my feet were really really cold, in which case i'd try to fix the holey sock so the hole doesn't show.

Snoods, headwraps and scarves stay on, hats come off!

I always take off my socks at the doctor's office.

I don't cover my hair, but I'd say that if you need your head examined, you take it off; if not, leave it on. If you wanted to be silly you could change into one of their hair coverings.

I only wear a kippah, being a guy and all, but I leave it on unless otherwise instructed.

the doctor's seeing you in a paper gown that barely covers the body, and you're worried about the modesty of your hair?!?!? (yes, yes, i know what you're really talking about. it just had to be said.)

beyond that, i'm inclined to agree with [livejournal.com profile] cbpotts. but then i have an aversion to hats worn indoors just in general.

I think it depends upon why you're seeing the doctor (head issue? take off the snood), how well you know your doctor, what gender your doctor is, and what your comfort level is.

When they say disrobe, I just go right ahead and get naked. Lucky for me [and my total lack of blood], my doctor's office has those huge *fabric* gowns that I can pretty much wrap around me twice. I love those things.

The head stuff depends. I take my kipah off for the dentist and barber, but leave it on during doctor visits unless I need to lean back, lie down or other situations. It's necessity based. Technically, as long as I'm not walking daled amot, I'm fine, but I feel naked w/o it.

Certainly, tznius doesn't apply to doctors considering that they look at the rest of the body, so hair covering doesn't really matter. If your head covering is a comfort thing, like my kipah, then leave it on. It just isn't necessary.

I have this thing about being naked with socks...or wearing a aper robe with socks. So I take my socks off regardless if they need to see my feet or not.
This makes my gyn laugh.

My primary doctor wants your socks off, so, socks come off. I just make sure I wear socks that aren't linty. I only disrobe waist down for the GYN, and she doesn't care about feet, so there, the socks stay on. If they had a hole, I'd leave them on, she has potholders on her stirrups, I don't think she cares about holey socks. :D

As for hats, it's hard to lie down for an exam with a hat on, so off it comes. If I had a covering that was easy to lie down in, I'd wear it.

Add me to the "I take my clothes off when I take my clothes off" contingent... it has never occurred to me to keep my socks on, their holiness being completely irrelevant to the issue. (Or my shoes, or my pants.)

As for headgear, I don't remember how I dealt with this back when I wore a kippa regularly. If I wore one now for religious reasons (which isn't the question you asked), I'd probably keep it on, and take it off on request and put it back on when the doctor is done examining my bald spot. If I wore a cap for modesty reasons, I'd take it off along with my other clothes.

Hat, I would remove. Head covering for cultural or religious reasons, keep on unless the doctor needs to see your head.

Socks stay on since I'm always cold and those little johnnies are not warm at all. Even if there's a hole.

My clothing is neat and clean and so is my body.

I'm making the same rounds with doctors and dentists; I expect to be thoroughly poked and prodded by the time the month is out (and if my lyme results are good enough to warrant donating blood, more poked than prodded). Aside from birth months, the first month of the year is the best time to remember regular checkups.

I always take socks off, but that's just because I like giving my skin as much opportunity to breathe as possible.

In terms of head coverings, never thought about it before, but I can understand the waffling. On the one hand, you're worrying about whether your hair is covered when the rest of you is wearing a paper gown, if that. On the other hand, the doc isn't examining your hair, and if you're someone who keeps socks on because it's not necessary to ditch them, it stands to reason that you'd keep your hair covering, which is of far more significance.

I generally leave my hair covered, but if I'm disrobing fully, and the hat/scarf doesn't stay put nicely when I'm taking off my top, and the doctor in question is female, and I'm certain no male students/residents/interens/fellows/what-have-you will be joining us for this event, I won't bother putting it back on.

You left off a very important question, though: when it is necessary to remove undergarments, do you put them on top of the clothing pile (logical from an efficiency POV) or hide them in the middle?

I'm of the "hide in the middle" camp.

I do the same when I'm in other need-to-remove-everything-including-undergarments situations where the attendant might see the clothing pile. Or I sink 'em to the bottom of my backpack.

I do this burying thing, too. I also keep scarves and such on, but sometimes remove hats if it feels utterly ridiculous to be wearing it, like my huuuuge red feathered hat.

Actually, I was just apprehensive about seeing the orthopedist and physical therapist last week, because I'd just remembered that I'd forgotten to shave my underarms that morning. Then I realized if the sight of a tiny bit of underarm hair would make them go blind or something, they probably shouldn't have gone into medicine, because they're going to see a whole lot of worse things.

As far as covering your hair -- well, in a vulnerable situation, if it makes you feel more dignified and in control, go for it. Same for the socks issue.

it depends

I don't cover my hair, so this is speculative.

On the one hand, given everything else I'm taking off, the hair is noise. On the other hand, I shouldn't throw all caution to the wind because of one specific issue. So I'd be inclined to keep the scarf on (not sure about an actual hat).

That said, it would depend on the gender of the doctor.

I'm never completely in the buff anyway, so I would leave on anything I could. Usually they give you some sort of robe or covering, even for the gyn.

For me, the covering issue doesn't depend on the sex of the doctor. I would keep my covering on unless they were examining my head.
