Jan. 10th, 2007 11:23 amSince it's January, it's "Seeing Doctors Time" here in
gnomiville. And due to various and sundry things from my appointment yesterday, I have a poll:
[Poll #904142]
(My mother raised us with the belief that one should dress nicely for doctors appointments (or, at least, not shlubbily) even though 99% of the time they're only going to see you in the johnny. I guessed how she'd vote in the poll, and when I asked her, she confirmed my guess as correct.)

Date: 2007-01-10 04:45 pm (UTC)I don't cover my hair, but I'd say that if you need your head examined, you take it off; if not, leave it on. If you wanted to be silly you could change into one of their hair coverings.

Date: 2007-01-10 05:18 pm (UTC)Certainly, tznius doesn't apply to doctors considering that they look at the rest of the body, so hair covering doesn't really matter. If your head covering is a comfort thing, like my kipah, then leave it on. It just isn't necessary.

Date: 2007-01-10 05:27 pm (UTC)As for hats, it's hard to lie down for an exam with a hat on, so off it comes. If I had a covering that was easy to lie down in, I'd wear it.

Date: 2007-01-10 05:32 pm (UTC)As for headgear, I don't remember how I dealt with this back when I wore a kippa regularly. If I wore one now for religious reasons (which isn't the question you asked), I'd probably keep it on, and take it off on request and put it back on when the doctor is done examining my bald spot. If I wore a cap for modesty reasons, I'd take it off along with my other clothes.

My clothing is neat and clean and so is my body.

Date: 2007-01-10 07:12 pm (UTC)I always take socks off, but that's just because I like giving my skin as much opportunity to breathe as possible.
In terms of head coverings, never thought about it before, but I can understand the waffling. On the one hand, you're worrying about whether your hair is covered when the rest of you is wearing a paper gown, if that. On the other hand, the doc isn't examining your hair, and if you're someone who keeps socks on because it's not necessary to ditch them, it stands to reason that you'd keep your hair covering, which is of far more significance.

Date: 2007-01-10 07:47 pm (UTC)You left off a very important question, though: when it is necessary to remove undergarments, do you put them on top of the clothing pile (logical from an efficiency POV) or hide them in the middle?

Date: 2007-01-10 09:03 pm (UTC)I'm of the "hide in the middle" camp.
I do the same when I'm in other need-to-remove-everything-including-undergarments situations where the attendant might see the clothing pile. Or I sink 'em to the bottom of my backpack.

Date: 2007-01-10 07:48 pm (UTC)As far as covering your hair -- well, in a vulnerable situation, if it makes you feel more dignified and in control, go for it. Same for the socks issue.

Date: 2007-01-11 02:48 am (UTC)it depends
Date: 2007-01-11 04:39 am (UTC)On the one hand, given everything else I'm taking off, the hair is noise. On the other hand, I shouldn't throw all caution to the wind because of one specific issue. So I'd be inclined to keep the scarf on (not sure about an actual hat).
That said, it would depend on the gender of the doctor.
