Last June, in anticipation of the birth of Muffin and Squeaker, [personal profile] c1 ran a CPR and first aid class in our apartment ([personal profile] mabfan, [personal profile] stormsdotter, [profile] lcmlc, my Abba, and I all got certification from this course). I had no intention of ever needing the knowledge, but it was important to have the knowledge in case (God forbid) something happened.

Yesterday, I was in Coolidge Corner running some errands, and as I walked past Trader Joe's a guy fell off his bike onto the sidewalk and did not immediately get up. I immediately put into use what I knew: make sure I was safe, that the situation was safe, and then go over to the victim. I asked if he was OK, and he said his knee was in great pain. He was lying in the middle of the sidewalk, so while he was nominally in the way of things, he was not in immediate danger, so I left him where he was. Two other people -- both women over the age of 70 -- stopped to see if the guy needed any help, and I asked if he wanted me to call an ambulance. First he said yes, but before I could dial 911, he changed his mind, saying he'd call his girlfriend to pick him up instead (noting that it would be cheaper than having an ambulance come). After he called his girlfriend, the two women and I were trying to figure out if/how to get him out of the middle of the sidewalk. My wrists are bothering me (google "mommy wrist" for more information), but I was the most able-bodied of the three of us, but as I was trying to figure out the best way to help him without injuring myself, a semi-burly guy came out of the Game Stop (where our victim had been, as evidenced from the bag that had fallen to the ground when the guy fell) and helped the injured guy get over to the side where there was a ledge he could sit on to wait for his girlfriend.

Once the two women and I had seen the injured guy to the ledge (and had collected his bags for him), we all went our separate ways. When I came out of the Post Office, the guy was still sitting on the ledge, but I presumed his girlfriend (who had been in Brighton) was on her way, so I headed to the T that was coming in my direction.

Part of what [personal profile] c1 taught us was to provide assistance at the needed level to the best of our abilities, and I believe I did just that in this situation.

[personal profile] mabfan and I have arranged for a friend, Carsten Turner, who is a certified instructor, to teach us CPR and First Aid at our place. He's willing to open up his class to any of our friends in the area that want or need certification.

Carsten will be teaching layperson CPR for adult, child, and infant, including choke-saving (what was previously known as the Heimlich maneuver) and the use of AED, along with First Aid. If we can get a few more people to take the class, it'll only cost $50 per person for the CPR part, and $80 total for those who also stay for First Aid. In addition to getting a wallet card showing certification, you'll also get a book with a CD. Also, if anyone wants to purchase a pocket face mask, Carsten has wallet-size ones for $10 and a larger one that's $15.

We're planning to hold the class on Sunday, June 28 at our place. If you're interested in signing up, reply here or send me e-mail.

...do humans *really* need oxygen? Breathing is overrated, really. I haven't been able to do so with much regularity since last week Tuesday.

Or we should all have gills.

gnomi: (Default)
-- We got a lot of snow between Friday and Sunday. It's pretty, but it's kind of treacherous to walk on.

-- I'm having a bout of StupidFoot. In other words, I'm having a recurrence of the random foot pain in my right foot (I last had StupidFoot in May). It makes the snow-covered streets/sidewalks that much more challenging.

-- I'm on vacation from now until I return to work on 5 January. Having time off from work-work, even though it's going to be filled with lots of stuff, is a very nice thing.

-- I spent part of this afternoon channelling Fawn Hall and shredding documents dating back to mid-1999.

-- Tonight, [personal profile] mabfan and I joined [profile] malkaesther and [personal profile] llennhoff at Ta'am China. The crowd included [profile] sorek, [profile] eireangus, [profile] madknits, [personal profile] chaiya, [personal profile] hakamadare, and four or five people whom I didn't know and who may or may not have online presences.

-- Last night was the first night of Channukah. This Saturday and Sunday are Rosh Chodesh, the beginning of the month of Tevet. What this means is that we have a Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Channukah, thus necessitating three different torah scrolls to be used on Saturday morning.

-- I can't do a rambly bits post without a mention of knitting, so I will note that I am making good progress on a couple of different projects I currently have on needles, and I am, for the first time in a long time, without an active pair of socks on needles (however, I have yarn for two more pairs of socks, so I'll be casting on new socks sooner rather than later).

-- Been busy, and this week looks busy, too. I'm approaching a deadline at work, so stuff is kicking into high gear. If posting is sparse here, that will be why. Alternatively, if I become Posty McPostalot, it will be due to my avoiding stuff I should be doing. :-)

-- Between Friday and Sunday, [personal profile] mabfan and I experienced two power outages. The one Friday started just before we were leaving for work, and power was restored long before we were home from work; yesterday's was more inconvenient (started around 5:30 PM and ended around 7:45 PM). At least yesterday afternoon's weather was on the cool (and rainy) side, so we weren't stifling in our powerless state.

-- Saturday night, I received word that I have sold my second story.

-- I've been morbidly fascinated by the ever-changing news story regarding Clark Rockefeller.

-- Some sort of allergen has been bugging me for the past week. I'm not sure if I'm now allergic to new and exciting summer plant life or if the recent consistent rainfall has stimulated my normal allergens to reinvigorate.

-- I've gotten particularly hooked on a couple of this summer's new shows, specifically "The Middleman" and "In Plain Sight." What surprises me about how much I like IPS is that I really didn't like Kate Harper, Mary McCormack's character in the later seasons of "The West Wing," and a lot of it was because of her acting style. But it seems to work well for IPS. And "The Middleman" is just plain fun. I wish it was pulling in better ratings.

Scene: [personal profile] gnomi is talking to [profile] lcmlc and Abba about [profile] lcmlc's current issues with Thoracic Outlet Compression.

[profile] lcmlc: Abba says it shouldn't be "thoracic," but "jurassic"*

Abba: Jurassic Outlet -- the place to get your low-priced dinosaurs!

*There's a tradition of this in Jewish biblical exegesis. There are passages in the Talmud and other rabbinic writings where they say, to bring a lesson (in that they don't actually believe we're misreading the text, but that a small change in the text allows them to bring another lesson. The Hebrew that introduces these are "Al tikra _____ ella ______."

Oh, and Omer, day 12.

Today, please think good thoughts for [profile] lcmlc (Etta Rivka bat Pesha Raizel), who is having wrist surgery this afternoon.

Tomorrow, please think good thoughts for [personal profile] mabfan (Michael Avraham ben Esther Miriam), who is having a minor medical procedure in the morning.

Thank you.

-- Yesterday and today we've been having what feels more like mid-September weather than mid-August weather (mornings in the mid- to high 50s, afternoons in the 70s). Not complaining in any way. Just remarking. I'll bet it's going back into the mid-80s soon. That's just the way of things here in Boston.

-- [personal profile] mabfan and I have been watching "Burn Notice." Highly recommended.

-- For those of you who may (like me) be fond of Jewish a cappella music, I recommend BOJAC, the Best of Jewish A Cappella.

-- I've finished the primary knitting on my big small knitting project and now need more little bits to knit on the T. I have an unfinished pair of socks I may pick up again, but I'm on the fence. Thinking, thinking.

-- My handheld has randomly decided not to beep at me for alarms anymore. This is annoying.

-- And while I'm randomly whinging, I'll mention the fact that my right foot has hurt on and off since Thursday, for no apparent reason. And the pain is migratory, which makes it even more annoying.

-- Today is my day of many meetings. I don't have these very often (she says thankfully). So if you're used to finding me during the day and I'm not around, it's probably because I'm in a meeting.

Since it's January, it's "Seeing Doctors Time" here in [livejournal.com profile] gnomiville. And due to various and sundry things from my appointment yesterday, I have a poll:

[Poll #904142]

(My mother raised us with the belief that one should dress nicely for doctors appointments (or, at least, not shlubbily) even though 99% of the time they're only going to see you in the johnny. I guessed how she'd vote in the poll, and when I asked her, she confirmed my guess as correct.)

I was 15 when I started wearing contact lenses. I've gone back and forth between wearing them regularly and wearing them very rarely. I'm currently in a "wear them regularly" phase; this phase started in the summer of 2005. I was in New York, and one morning my glasses broke completely unexpectedly (the left temple disconnected from the rest of the glasses in a way that couldn't be repaired). And for reasons I'm still not clear on, I'd packed my contact lenses as backup eyewear instead of my (previous prescription) spare pair of glasses. While there was a place around the corner from [personal profile] mabfan's mother's house where I was able to get my frames replaced (which, again, was unexpected -- usually, lenses to fit in one pair of frames will not fit into another set of frames), I kept wearing my lenses most of the time.

When I started wearing contact lenses, I was advised not to wear them for more than 12 hours at a time. I violate this regularly (inasmuch as I put them in at about 6:15 in the morning and don't usually take them out before 7 at night), but, just in case I need to take them out during the day, I carry my glasses wtih me. Every morning, I put my lenses in and put my glasses in my backpack. And until this morning, I've wondered if, perhaps, that was silly. But this morning, I was at my desk at work, and I started feeling a sharp pain in my left eye. I figured that perhaps I had something in my eye, so I took my lens out to clean it, intending to put it back in. But then I noticed that it had a significant tear in it. Aha! said I. This is why I carry my eyeglasses. I quickly removed my right lens, tossed both in the trash, and put my glasses on.

And, since I wear the lenses that are designed to be worn 14 days and then tossed (today was day 6 on this set of lenses), I'll just pull another set out of the cabinet when I get home, and all will be well for tomorrow.

Could the pill halve multiple-sclerosis risk?

For numerous reasons, I find this research fascinating.

Thanks to [personal profile] mabfan for pointing the study out to me.
