Actually, as the quarterback, you don't have to do much other than throw the ball, and all the big guys are surrounding you to protect you from being hit.
(Well, that's a simplification of it all, but, yeah -- the quarterback is the most protected of all the players, and there are serious penalties for "roughing the passer.")
