On Saturday night, MAB and I went with two friends to see Star Wars: Musical Edition at MIT. The show was fun and silly, just what we needed following the deluge of sorrowful news during the course of the day (see [livejournal.com profile] mabfan's account of our Saturday). The musicals that were parodied ranged from Gilbert and Sullivan's Mikado and Pirates of Penzance to Fiddler on the Roof (though they chose a more obscure song from this one - Hodel's "Far from the Home I Love") and Guys and Dolls. On the way, they hit A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Les Mis, Phantom of the Opera and City of Angels, and that was just act one.

MAB and I had wondered, this being MIT, whether any mention would be made about the day's events, but none was and - as I mentioned after the show - it made sense not to mention it. Even though it was likely that 90% (if not more) of the audience was aware of the loss of Columbia, it would've started the show with the wrong sort of tone had it been mentioned. Instead, we were treated to an evening that allowed us to forget the real events of the day and concentrate on the fantasy of the Star Wars universe and the hilarity of it as a musical.

I do believe I'll be humming "Jabba the Hut" (to the tune of "The Oldest Established" from Guys and Dolls) for much of the day.
