Nomi, a question that has always bothered me, and since you're a punctuation junkie, you're going to be my "go-to" gal. If something ends in S, and you want to imply ownership, do you just use an apostraphe, or do you use 's ? For example, flowers that belong to Hyannis. Hyannis' flowers or Hyannis's flowers? This comes up at work more that you'd think, and I learned a long time ago that you weren't supposed to do the double s thing. And yes, I realize that my spelling is awful, please don't hold that against me. I know this is pretty basic so please just humor me.
OK... here's the deal. The general rule is, you use 's except in the case of so-called famous historical people. So, it's Hyannis's flowers and Chris's book but Moses' law and Jesus' teachings.
That said, you'll find that some places' house style is that there's no s used, no matter who it is -- Chris' llama, Tobias' emu, whatever.
