I've found that dried myrtle leaves make a lovely Havdalah spice.

By 'throw out' the etrog I mean give to someone who intends to make jelly or liqueur from it.

And by 'keep' the lulav I mean save it until erev pesach, where I use it for kindling to light the fire to burn chametz. This is almost a closed cycle - I use leftover matza from Pesach for Tashlich (during the week, not on RH)

At the Bostoner's, they decorate the aron kodesh with lulavim. They also save the lulav in addition to the etrog for havdallah for the year.

I like to add cloves to the etrog for havdallah.
